Description

This prelim group piece, drawn by Turtles artists Steve Lavigne and Ryan Brown, would eventually become one of the most recognized and re-used pieces in Ninja Turtles history. From toys, to apparel, to posters, to essentially every conceivable piece of Turtles merchandise available in the 80’s and 90’s - this was one of probably the two most commonly licensed pieces out there (the other being the sewer shot).

If you look carefully, you can see the note to the right of Michaelangelo indicating they wanted to bring the character closer to Leonardo, in the centre. In the final production piece which followed, the character position was adjusted, and the Turtles facial expressions were dialed back a tad for wider consumer appeal (parental acceptance).

Great Turtlemania era image! It embodies the right tone for a nostagic trip back to the late 80's and early 90's.
