DescriptionGod Country is the book that put Donny Cates on the map for me. This is also something that I stumbled on by accident. Image had a Creator Panel at NYCC 2016 and the follow-up panel was for the rapper Logic who wanted to try a panel for the 1st time at a con. So I decided to sit on the Image panel and stay in my spot until the next panel started. I wasn't prepared though for the pitch of the book. "A man picks up a sword that cures his Alzheimer’s and challenges the gods that want it back with a simple yet defiant line: COME AND TAKE IT.”I contacted my LCS before the book was solicited and told them to add it to my pull list. Everything within this book resonates with me deeply. The depiction of father-son relationships, the harrowing impact of mental illness on family dynamics, and the painful process of forgetting precious memories are all woven into a narrative that culminated in an issue so moving, that it left me in contemplation long after the pages were turned. This series is special, not just for its storytelling or art, but for how it mirrors the ups and downs of life and love, leaving a lasting imprint on me. While I wasn't in the hobby of art collecting when this came out I'm glad I grabbed this page when it showed up on CAF. Thanks go to Matt Todd for letting this go. Social/Sharing |

They could have stretched the premise to double the length, but Cates and Shaw kept it short to leave us wanting more. It briefly touches how the dementia affects the son and family by dialogue, but instead speeds the pace with action. Emmett weilding Valofax in front of his family for a cliffhanger in the middle of the series is a major a turning point in the story.

I agree this is a special creation - something non-comics fans should be exposed to - I was lucky to pick up a page or two when they dropped but still keep my eyes open for more!

Thank you for picking it up. It's a very special story to me. I'm glad it's gone to a collector that it means just as much too.
