DescriptionThis is Luca Pizzari Punisher character redesign for the Heroes Reborn: Squadron Savage one-shot published by Marvel Comics June 2021. The art was drawn on the front and the back of the board.I find this piece fascinating as this book marked the return of the Punisher after an eight month hiatus of the character that started November 2020. During the 8 month period Marvel postponed and cancelled some of the Punisher's planned comic book appearances. I'm confident this will be a temporary look and look forward to seeing something like Pizzari's jacket idea used in the future. In the news: - Syfy.com (January 8, 2021) - MensHealth.com (January 15, 2021) - Bleeding Cool (March 18, 2021) "Of late, The Punisher has become a problem for Marvel. The Punisher Skull image has been adopted by militia groups, as well as being used to celebrate legally questionable army and police tactics. Armed force and police forces have had to be instructed not to use the skull image. Not all of them abide by it. The Punisher skull image was also used by QAnon for recruitment purposes and worn by armed rioters at the Capitol last month." - Bleeding Cool (July 30, 2021) "Syfy suggested the character needs to get a makeover. "Get an artist with a flair for costume design to do a complete visual re-do that eliminates the skull. Hire a writer to find a story hook to explain why the change in visual aesthetic. You'll catch heat for creating a "woke Frank Castle," no doubt, but who cares? If the story is a good one, people will buy the book." - Bleeding Cool (August 3, 2021) "The Punisher did return as an incidental character in two 2021 series, The Marvels looking at a very damaged version of the character in a chronological version of Marvel history, and also in Heroes Reborn, recreated as an alternate universe character with, notably, no Skull logo." Some clever little design touches here, man. Always enjoy reading the artists' notes in design sheets and this one's no different!

I agree. Pizzari came up with some thoughtful ways to connect with Frank's past in a deep and dark way. So great seeing the notes.

Interesting design concepts and thought process. Yeah I do like how he tries to pay tribute to his dead children.

Love all the thought process shown in both the notes and images here! "Rambo headband - too much?" Probably :) Like the idea of the mourning shawl/arm band. Great batch of concept adds, George - congrats!

Just have him go on undercover missions without his normal look. Explain that he can't wear the symbol anymore because a bunch of out of shape whiny boys bought shirts from Hot Topic and made the symbol meaningless. They wear it and schoolyard bullies give them an instant beat down. But then again, I'm sure corporate plays it both ways and licenses that symbol out to Hot Topic in the first place.

"Get an artist with a flair for costume design to do a complete visual re-do that eliminates the skull."
Um, how about NO? Use the same classic costume forever, because visually speaking, everyone knows it's the skull on the chest that makes him look cool. What about going about your business instead of giving up on life every time some ignorrant turds co-opt an image or symbol? How about publishing a Punisher series where he's always in his classic costume and the theme of every issue centers around Punisher tracking down and wasting all the losers who co-opt the skull on his outfit? I haven't bought monthly comics since 1993, but I would buy the floppies for a series like that!

Love these, they evoke memories of OHOTMU pages and all that great Keith Pollard art that's floated around
