DescriptionI would like to think that in the event of a life or death emergency I would be able to bring to bear all the moves and techniques I have subconsciously absorbed through 50 years of reading superhero comics and instinctively spring into action, like, y’know Green Arrow in “What Can One Man Do?”, or at the very least, assume a “take charge” attitude, similar to what Superman did at the end of "Superman/Gen 13”, and co-ordinate myself and anyone else around me into such a way as to navigate everyone out of the crisis. In reality I know I would panic and just fold. So it is entirely appropriate that I do not own an FM DD page featuring ol’ Hornhead but I possess this page showing Ben Urich, who in a moment of extreme danger chose flight over fight. Being confronted by a deadly ninja assassin with a couple of two-foot sais will have that effect on you. But Urich has his part to play and this page shows the critical moment when he recognises the female in the photograph which puts in motion the rest of the issue and which in turn leads into the momentous events of the following ish. To indicate the impression these issues made on me I could run through these happenings in spite of the fact that it has been over thirty years since I read them, but I won’t do that on the offchance that anyone reading this has not yet read Frank Miller’s first run on Daredevil.I bought this page on eBay.com so many years ago (early noughties) that I have only the haziest memory of its cost (low three figures). I still have to pinch myself that I have a page, any page, from what I consider the greatest three-parter (in a much longer storyline) in superhero comics – Spiked, The Damned, Last Hand. This page has many of the defects OA purists are supposed to frown on: yellowing board, trimmed corners, whiteout, and an entire stripped-in panel held on with masking tape, no matter that that panel seems to be a piece of Duo-Shade board to set it apart from the “real life” of the rest of the page. But these are all the things that I think give the page its character as a working and worked-upon artifact. I am sure no CAF member would judge me, “This person does not deserve to own this page if they have not read the comic in over three decades.” The reason for this is I am anxious that I will be disappointed and not find it as good as I remember it when I read it and the following issue for the first time on Christmas Day 1981. It was a very happy Christmas that year. The elephant in the room. I have not read “that” comic. And even though that is not a good enough excuse, I have read FM’s 2018 interview with a UK newspaper in which he distanced himself from that comic. (Haven’t we all made terrible hurtful mistakes that we were too proud to apologise for? I know I have. Many many times.) Miller also dismisses Trump with the line, “Real men stay bald”. I don’t think those two gestures are unrelated. Social/Sharing |

That is a beautiful page from an amazing story. Such an emotional storyline from a writer and artist at the top of their game. I am so happy that you were able to share this page with all of us.

Having been a spectator spending far too many hours on the site without putting anything substantial back in I am pleased to make amends and find that even someone with a fairly modest collection such as myself has something that other people may find of interest. Gratifying to have your kind remark.

I was self-conscious about how sparse my collection is in comparison with others on the site but with encouragement, specifically from Felix and Simon, I have started to “share”. It has been a worthwhile experience and I would recommend it to everyone. Thank you for your vote of confidence.

Outstanding page! These early Miller DDs are why I got into comics. Miller's use of Urich as the relatable observer of DD, Elektra, Kingpin and the other superfolks in this tale was really effective

A sharp observation, which is so obvious now that you mention it but which I admit did not occur to me until your comment (in spite of what I say in my description). Thank you for your insight.

A great layout from Miller to create a half splash that he would use in other iconic titles he has done over the years. It is done to make you concentrate and linger on the image for as long as it took you to read the other side of the page. When these stories hit, it became the grim and gritty genre defined.

Your perceptive comment has made me want to pull out my copies of Ronin and Wolverine which I think are two of the titles to which you refer; the first possibly and the second almost certainly.

Coming from a collector with the most extensive and impressive DD OA collection I have seen on CAF those are words of high praise. Thank you!

Great page. I enjoyed your description too. There was me thinking that Frank had swung to the far right but Trump is so far right hes left the planet. The Miller bit, ' Miller also dismisses Trump with the line, “Real men stay bald”.' leaves doubt as to Franks sanity. We all know thats not real hair on Trumps head. Its a fungal growth.

Magnificent page from a magnificent storyline. I was always impressed to see how Frank Miller integrated hard-boiled journalism as a clever way to moving the story forward. Of course, Ben Urich is very much at the forefront, but even J. Jonah Jameson stands tall here, demonstrating that the 4th power really means business. A rare treat in the world of superhero comics...
