DescriptionI have probably read more comics with interior art by Gil Kane than any other comic artist. This is not through me having sought them out, although I am obviously a fan, but more to do with his longevity and ubiquity. I was reading and enjoying his silver age Marvel Comics work as black and white Marvel UK reprints and his even earlier silver age DC work reprinted in the 100 Page Spectaculars before I could even discern different artists’ styles. It is especially gratifying to have won this page back around the turn of the century because I distinctly remember picking up, when it came out on the newsstand, the comic from which this page comes. The issues of DD directly preceding 158 were graced with some of the great names of the silver age – Infantino, Kane, Colan, Robbins – and you can’t help feeling that this was the passing on of the torch to a new generation. This page appeals to me because it features some of the trademark Gil Kane-isms: the dramatic body language, the below-the-nose viewpoint, and the combined close-up and full-body shot of the same character in the same panel. Although Klaus Janson is credited with the inks it is compared to some of the other pages from this ish on CAF the most un-Janson-esque, as if he recognised how powerful it was that it did not need any distracting inking flourishes. I wonder if the modest price I paid for the page on eBay (I cannot recall the exact amount but it must have been inexpensive if I could afford to outbid everyone else back then) was due to the fact that the close-up of the face on the semi-splash has been redrawn on a cut-to-size piece of board and stuck onto the page. Novices to OA such as myself would not have realised how much this affects the re-sell value, but then that was not one of my considerations anyway. This highly-wrought scene could have been a major turning point in the history of comicbook culture. Being Daredevil has taken such a terrific toll on the personal life of Matt Murdock that he vows to hang up his cowl forever. “Sure, Pal. Sure.” It is an indication as to how clichéd this scenario had become (Cap in 176, Supes in 201, and most famously Spidey in 50) that it did not even make the cover. I don’t think it is a spoiler to say that Matt goes back on his word and within a few short pages once more dons the red garb. This is ironic as it has subsequently been reported that Daredevil the comic was around this time in real danger of cancellation owing to poor sales so should Murdock have stayed true to his promise then Marvel could have used the opportunity to end the title. As it was, and as everyone knows, Frank Miller came onboard and first with Roger McKenzie and then working from his own scripts turned the sales around and made Daredevil the mainstay of the Marvel Comics line it is to this day. But can you imagine if Marvel had pulled the plug before ish 158? No Frank Miller Daredevil, no DKR, no Year One, no Tim Burton Batman, no Christopher Nolan reboot. It does not bear thinking about. But then there also would have been no Ben Affleck Daredevil movie, so “Every Cloud…” and all that. Social/Sharing |

Great art as always from this fine artist. The 'hero no more' cliche line. So overused. Cheap, emotional poppycock.

I was reading this again recently and noticed that it was done “Marvel-style”, with Shooter and Kane contributing the plot for McKenzie’s script, and I could not help wondering if GK was behind this episode in the issue just so he could “flex his muscles”. I can imagine him, with his tongue out like Hal Crane in Bad Weekend, drawing this and having an absolute blast.

Great page you got back in the day. Daredevil was always my favorite super-hero and Kane's work on this character was inspired. I love Janson inks, not sure he would be my first choice on Kane but certainly did an admirable job here.

Good choice of favourite character (and I guess role model). Is it any wonder that Daredevil is so beloved and a part of this, I think, is the selflessness (and tragedy) of his origin, and the barriers he had to overcome to achieve what he did professionally. Listen to me: I am talking as if he is a real person. But isn’t that the sign of well-realised character?

Great pencils, ably embellished with those wonderful, organic inks Janson always provides. Sweet page!

Thank you. Klaus Janson is one of those inkers who is so good I bet my pencils would look great with him on inks. And I can’t draw.

The tears underneath may have been too strong of an emotional potency and may have took it too far. Kane is as effective at wringing out the drama in a scene for all its worth with layouts that are the best of different places of influence.

You could be right. Tears run down Matt’s cheeks on the page after this but they might have been overkill on this page which is powerful enough as it is.

Wow -- that's such a great page! Kane and Janson were at the top of their game on this issue!

Thank you. I would have liked to have seen some Zipatone on this page, as there is on other pages in the issue, but that is a minor gripe and I do enjoy it very much.

Kane is so great at high drama--as this excellent example demonstrates.

I agree. Buttoned-up comics readers such as myself can emote extravagantly vicariously through Matt Murdock who did it (admittedly in the privacy of his own home) years before it is not only condoned but encouraged for our emotional well-being.

Wow. It's hard to imagine obtaining a more exemplary page by GK, or any other artist. The choice of panel layout, the different views of the character, the ink's emphasis on the underlying pencil art. Truly special
