Description

There was a spell towards the beginning of the 1980s when I thought Trevor Von Eeden was so good he could stand toe to toe with any of his contemporaries – Byrne, Pérez, Miller. TVE had a pleasing clean linestyle and some attractively eye-catching page designs/layouts. I don’t think it was a fluke that it coincided with him either inking himself (the first issues of Thriller) or being paired with an inker, such as Dick Giordano, with whom he was in tune (the Green Arrow mini-series). It is hard to know if this quantum leap in the quality of his art was due to TVE upping his game because he knew the published version of his work would be more faithful to what he intended, or if everything he did up to that point was a period of development. The two earlier titles I am familiar with of his – Black Lightning and the Green Arrow segment in World’s Finest – saw him matched mainly with one particular inker and the art looked so bland it is difficult to get any indication of what promise TVE had .

TVE is on record as saying that the work he is most proud of from the 1980s is Batman Annual 8 which he inked himself, and which is greatly enhanced by a colouring job by Lynn Varley on one of her earliest colouring assignments in comics. But for me TVE’s best work is from the title from which these two consecutive pages are taken, the Green Arrow miniseries, which also boasts a gorgeous colouring turn by the under-rated Tom Ziuko.

The art and colouring are great but the engaging storyline is what takes it to another level, the pitch perfect characterization of Oliver Queen, one-time multi-millionaire businessman but now working-class hero. “We think we own things, Dinah … but in the long run, things own us,” bemoans Queen at one point. Hmmm.

Stop me if you have heard this one before, but I did not learn this until quite late in the day and that was when I read TVE’s interview with the Comics Journal: It is a measure as to the high regard in which TVE’s work was held in the mid-1980s that Frank Miller gave him first refusal on the art chores on Year One. Now I bow to no-one in my admiration for David Mazzucchelli’s work on Year One, which I believe shades it against DKR to be crowned GOAT Batman story and David Mazzucchelli’s art as anyone will say is absolutely integral, and also it is pointless to speculate on what could have been, but Batman Year One written by Frank Miller and drawn by Trevor Von Eeden at their respective creative peaks would have really been something to see.

Thank you. I like your Don Newton pages. He is an artist I bracket with TVE in that they are both underappreciated, and they are anomalous in that their original art is sought-after but not outrageously-priced (aside from their covers, splashes and “birth pages”) and seem to rarely change hands. You have good taste.

This series and his early work on a Batman and the Outsiders fill-in, not to mention those early issues of Thriller, cemented Trevor as one of my favorite artists of the era. This work was and is breathtaking. Congratulations on this page that showcases so many of his strengths.

It is strange but you could easily mistake the artist on my pages and that on Thriller as two different people but TVE’s art was evolving and continued to do so. Thank you for your appreciation. I will on your tip have to dig out my copy of BATO 21 – I am looking forward to rereading it.

Fantastic page, Simon. Feels like a nice transition place between his super heroics and his work on Thriller

Thanks for sharing

It is strange what you write because your striking TVE Batman page seems to me to be the missing link between the standard superhero style and the kineticism of Thriller (although if memory serves Thriller came before Batman 401). Thank you for your compliment.
