DescriptionThe next artist I hit up at the Swansea Comics and Gaming Convention, 2023 was Patrick Goddard whose work I was semi-familiar with from seeing his Inktober drawings on eBay. As he works primarily for 2000AD and I was no longer a regular reader of that title anymore I could not claim to be an expert on him and he was very understanding of my less-than-encyclopaedic knowledge of his back catalogue. I did know that he is currently getting published in 2000AD a 13-part Rogue Trooper serial which is written by Garth Ennis. When this serial – Blighty Valley – is collected I will be first in line to pick it up. Having not attended a convention for over five years it was refreshing to once again see an artist at work – changing pens at regular intervals, all the while checking and changing – and the amount of time PG was taking in drawing what I thought would be a simple headshot I requested did increase my anticipation. When he turned the drawing over to show me what he had done I was eye-poppingly slack-jawed and could not help proudly showing it to the person next to me in the queue for PG. My first Rogue Trooper and after this I am not sure if I need another. PG was the only artist who seemed to be selling originals, all reasonably priced, and if I was better prepared with proper and protective means of transporting art I might have considered buying a page. Once Blighty Valley is released in one volume the originals' true worth will follow on.Social/Sharing |

It appears to have marker and drybrush layers to the shadow parts and thinner lighter touch where there is light. All very effective to convey the dimensional qualities of the headshot.

Your comment is the equivalent of when Linus was asked what he thought the clouds resembled and he said a fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls, or Jacob deceiving Isaac into giving him Esau’s birthright, and my comment that PG changed pens from time to time is like when Charlie Brown said that to him the clouds looked like a little ducky or a horsey. Thank you for your insightful comment on drawing techniques.
