DescriptionThis is another one of my online-charity-auction wins in which I won with either a knockdown winning bid or won with a below-market-value bid (in this case a three-figure sum for a published [variant] cover for Flash 57). It crosses my mind sometimes that there is some sort of stigma attached to charity auction lots. I get the impression that they often financially underachieve because of the perception that because something has been donated by an artist who is not going to get any recompense from the auction then their heart will not be totally in it and they will turn out something which is below their best, or because the art donor of the work is obviously not going to be donating one of their family jewels, but something lesser. I would disagree with the idea that lots in charity auctions are in some way below standard. There are charity auctions that do realise their full financial potential: the Jim Lee auctions in aid of comic book stores, the Mike Mignola auctions for World Central Kitchen, and Felix’s auctions to benefit the Lu Family Fund, to name a few that come to mind immediately.I won the auction for this cover back in May, 2019 when ComiConArt!! posted this on eBay to help raise funds to cover the medical bills for Joyce Chin. Anyone unaware of the details of JC’s health scare can check out the full story on her Go Fund Me page. The good news is that in the intervening four years she has recovered, is drawing again, and attending conventions. I had an aunt on my mother’s side with an identical, sort of, name to Joyce Chin. If I had a choice I would choose a pencilled page of comic art as opposed to its inked equivalent and this is because of the greater tonal variety that can be achieved by graphite. Even though this looked to me like a pencilled piece there is a lot of black bleedthrough on the reverse to indicate that some or even a good portion of the drawing is ink-based. Mico Suayan is one of a number of artists whose pencilled work is so finished their comics can be published directly from that with colouring technology advanced enough today (as opposed to the 1980s) to enhance the art without obscuring it. Thank you to ComiConArt!! for their donating this page of Mico Suayan art for a charitable cause. Social/Sharing |

Mico Suayan cover art begins at 4 figures now. In addition to helping Joyce, this was definitely a worthwhile pickup for the artistry alone. Mico doen't skip any detail even though he could have used the excuse of motion blur when Flash is seemingly at many places all at once. Any one of those Flash images could have been put in their own cover individually.

Thank you once again for your eloquent appreciation and the market-price data, which I have not kept abreast of after my one-and-done purchase. Since uploading this drawing I watched for the first time Bill’s creator spotlight and art sales video with Mico Suayan from 2022 and I realise I am very fortunate to have grabbed a page when I did.

When I first saw the name of your gallery I thought you were a collective but on exploring your collection I now realise who you are. Honoured to have a remark from someone high up on The Original Comic Art/Comics Power List. Your collection is phenomenal, and the peak-Jim-Aparo section is the best I have seen. Keep up your good work on promoting the cause and thank you for your comment.

that is a fantastic cover
Thank you for your comment. Your Superman cover with Bizarro is none-too-shabby neither. That drawing is splendid. I really really like it.
