Description"The Final Glory of Deacon Frost"February 1977 Eric Brooks aka BLADE was created by Marv Wolfamn and Gene Colan. His legendary first appearance happened in Tomb of Dracula #10 (it's in all of our minds). This was one of the first key comics in my collection and I still have it. Blade, a dhampir, dedicated vampire hunter, nigthstalker and daywalker... This beautiful page explains a historic moment in Tomb of Dracula's run. The moment when Hannibal King and Daimon Hellstrom (Son of Satan) find Blade's grave and dig up him. The final panel shows Blade "in all his glory" with a stake in his chest! Just before Blade's resurrection... when he is separated from his doppelganger. "They call me... Blade! Blade... The Vampire Killer!!" BLADE Social/Sharing |

The Colan and Palmer creativity embodied in a layered and meticulously crafted page! We get the shadowy figures and faces plus the all important gothic atmosphere with this graveyard setting. While we can't see color here, the grave robbing act in itself suggest that it is night. The occasion falling leaf shows it's Autumn, and the diagonal direction of the linework and of the flow of the coat tails shows wind and lighting by the moon all cooperate to achieve the feeling of having the audience join them in this grim task.

Marcus, I can't imagine a better description about narrative technique. Colan and Palmer achieved a peak in their carreers in ToD run. The ambiance, backgrounds, etc are really well worked. For all the reasons you listed Deacula is on of the best Marvel titles of 70's. Thanks so much always for your deep knowledge about MU! Best my friend!

Thanks you too for the comment! I fully agree. It's not a super page but it's a very good exemple of what ToD fans really like! Best

Great sense of atmosphere to this page - Colan is so good at that. I love me some Blade, too, and if you're a fan, hard to top a sweet page by his co-creator in Colan! Love that last panel. Congrats, man!

Dark, moody and mysterious, those are the words that come to mind when I look at this page from Tomb of Dracula. Beautifully penciled by the great Gene Colan and masterfully inked by the superb Tom Palmer, this page comes from a story that's irght in the middle of Colan and Palmer's legendary run on TOD, Colan was amazing at his ability to convey moodiness. And he was unsurpassed in his skill at rendering cloaks and coats and other clothing. Palmer was his perfect partner. Palmer's gorgeous inks truly enhanced the look of Colan's pencils. Together they were an unbeatable combination.
