Description

"The Testing of Shang-Chi"
April 1974

Shang-Chi (aka Master of Kung-Fu or Brother Hand) was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin. His first appearance was in December 1973 in Special Marvel Edition Vol. 1 #15. He also appeared in Special Marvel Edition #16 and #17 when tittle turned into The Hands of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. At the same time, April 1974, The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #1 was published by Magazine Management, a sibling corporation of Marvel Comics. Then, this is one of the first appearances of Shang-Chi (the third or the fourth one)

Shang-Chi is one of the most iconic (amongst other relevant ones) characters created by one the most talented bronze age comic artists, JIM STARLIN. I was looking for a beautiful 70's Starlin's page. Not easy, you know... Starlin art is elusive and expensive... I'm not still quenched! My dream is to have a Starlin's cosmic page... time to time!

Shang-Chi, beyoind MCU, is a dramatic character. Even more under Al Milgrom's inks.

"When I started in the comic book business, 'Art Of' books were strictly the provenance of the greats, like Rembrandt and Da Vinci. But times change, and so do attitudes. Now the comic is considered an art form, and I hope 'A Life in Words and Pictures' contributes a little to that art form's history."

Fantastic use of screentone everywhere!  It adds a lot of depth and the way it is part of the wall pattern in panel 2 is amazing!  The angle of the big panel by Starlin gives this a cinematic feel where you can imagine the camera moving within that space to pull back fromt he previous close up panel.

Awesome!  Great head shot at the top right and the perspective and depth exhibited in that bottom splashy panel are outstanding!   And from the first issue?!  Many a box checked here, Toni.  Congrats!

Hi Kahlil it has been a stroke of luck to get this page! You described perfectly Jim Starlin's talent. I'm so happy because it's super difficult to find 70's Starlin's art. You know! Thanks so much always for your comments.

The layout of this page shows what a master Starlin is.  and talking about the inks, are all those different background effects different types of zip-a-tone.  Whatever they are, kudos to Milgrom, a truly amazing inker.

Starlin / Milgrom made a great art team in 70's!!! You are right, the composition is excellent. Grazie my friend.

A mind bending page! And how Starlin managed to get such power and drama into a sequence with no action is testament to his genius.
