DescriptionImage Comics. Drawn/signed by Ottley 9-2-10. Published November, 2010.In the heat of battle, Space Racer shoots his gun at Viltrum while the other group members (minus Battle Beast and Oliver) fly as fast as they can right behind the blast. Tech Jacket and Allen are knocked away, leaving Thaedus, Nolan, and Mark to fly into the planet's core. The gun's blast destabilizes the core and the three Viltrumites plow through the planet causing an obliterating blow. The entire planet implodes in the following pages. Not character heavy pages, but there's really only one way to depict the destruction of a planet. One of the real "wow!" moments from the series. For those unaware: The ring around Planet Viltrum is not a natural feature, but instead a structure built from the bodies of deceased Viltrumites. It was created as a tribute and a monument to the fallen after a civil war and subsequent population reduction. A monument comprised of dead bodies big enough to be seen from space. That is METAL!! The event was big enough to create fan-researched lore and reddit threads about the density of the bodies in the ring, and the math behind how much energy was needed for the destruction of the planet. Unlike many later Invincible pieces with split pencils/inks, this one is all Ottley with his inks over his own blue line pencils on two Image Comics boards taped together. Social/Sharing |

I really like that you can read this slowly and savor every line and detail as the moment of planetary destruction is important enough to bear witness.
