DescriptionMark Bagley's intended cover to Amazing Spider-Man #361, the now iconic introduction of Carnage. Features a gigantic, imposing figure of Carnage hovering over a startled Spider-Man with lush background details (versus the printed version).According to Randy Emberlin, Bagley's inking partner at the time and on this piece, this was the only cover from the artist's five-year run on Amazing Spider-Man where the team was asked to come up with a new version. Writer, David Michelinie, "didn’t want the battle to appear to be over with Carnage the victor. The 2nd cover shows them struggling in the heat of battle...typical marvel style." One of the most important creative teams to work on Spider-Man in the Modern era. The cover captures one of the most significant moments in Spidey's continuity of the past 50 years. The debut sold 750,000 copies over three printings. Published in 2019 as the Mark Bagley Variant Cover to Absolute Carnage #1. Social/Sharing |

Talk about alternative history! This is a great cover to have. I hope Marvel (and DC) continue to publish unused covers!

Wow! This is truly something else! I love how the eye is drawn from the black of carnage down the page with the lines and Spidey. Great piece.

Epic first appearance piece! Perfect timing with the Carnage's big screen debut! Bagley and Emberlin were the perfect artist team for ASM during this time and they were firing on all cylinders for this cover! Their style is so iconic for the era. Huge congrats Dinesh!

Beautifully finished work! Some of the classic villain intro covers had Spidey seemingly defeated on the cover as well.

I suppose you could argue that the published cover made Spidey seem in more peril ( though of course no cash cow in comics is ever really in trouble ) but either would have worked. This one is just as good.

It's hard to find a better Bagley cover than this, and the backstory adds SO much to it. Amazing cover and add to your collection!

It's a killer vintage Bagley Spidey example, and historic too boot; but I have to disagree with David Michelinie who "didn’t want the battle to appear to be over with Carnage the victor.", and thus advocated for the change to the published one. To me this cover shows Spidey getting up to continue to the fight, and the final published version depicts Carnage as the victor to a much greater extent; but either way, both are great!

I don't think he looks defeated. It looks more like "what the heck was that all about?" His suit isn't even ripped. ;) Wow, that's a sweet Carnage cover. Even though it was posted later, would this be his first drawing? I never thought about it before, but it feels confusing. But I'm dumb, so it probably isn't. Spectacular cover. Big congrats!

I never realized until seeing the art they say "The Spawn of Venom" - wonder if that's a little middle finger to ToddFather? Hmmm...
In any case, great page, congrats. Bet it looks stunning in person!
