Here's a good shot of the damage.

Here are the magic words that I think were meant to be the page's main protection

Here's another look at a corner of the page.

Description

This is a page of original art that I bought on eBay from someone who runs a collectible store, so should have known better. It arrived horribly damaged (not to mention very late).

What was the guy who sold this to me thinking? A single unfolded Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box taped (!) to the front (!!) of the art page and then thrown in an overlarge plastic envelope does not offer enough protection for original comic book art.

But, then, you knew that, didn't you?

I got really tired of seeing that damaged page, so I've changed the main image to the scanned art , which doesn't show the damage. Images of the condition the page was in when it arrived are below.

Maddening when sellers don't respect the art.

Well, the guy says he'll give me my money back and I should ship it back "any way I want". Part of me wants to ship it back in the same envelope and in the same way he sent it to me. Part of me wants to ship it the way he should have shipped it to me in the first place, just to show him how it's done.

He doesn't deserve it back!! Get a majority refund and protect the art or call CPS=Comic Protective Services. I can't believe this stuff happens to one of a kind historic art. It is such a shame!!

It cost $20 + $5 shipping. He's offering $8 and I suspect that's as high as he'll go. (Just a vibe I'm getting.) It's tough. I don't really want to send it back (1) because of the hassle and (2) the reasons you cite. It's only going to get worse. No, it's not the most important piece in the history of comics, but it's an original and desrves more respect than its gotten. I'm practically convinced now to just take what he'll give, for the artwork's sake.

Please expose the buffoon that sent you this mangled disaster. Please give us his ebay or www so we don't fall victim to his foolishness. I'm so sorry you had this experience. What an absolute horror show.

To be honest, regardless of his claims, I don't think he has much experience with comic art. I don't want to give his ebay ID here, but I'll link to the eBay listing, where those who wish can find him and see pictures of the page before it left his hands. Seems to be a sports card store. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150477046765

Are you a comic-l group member? There was a similarly mangled page that a member ironed out. He went into detail about the process he used. The before and after pics were pretty amazing. Relatively sure, based on that, this page would be like new given the same treatment.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see if I can find the relevant post.

Found it! It was Len Callo and this piece. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=710903&GSub=2840 He describes the process he used in the description on CAF. Best of luck... Sorry for your troubles!

There isn't anything that infuriates me more than what you've presented here. I can not bare seeing art stupidly destroyed. Whether the art in question is valued at one dollar, or a thousand, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that original art "IS ART"! It's also ONE-OF-A-KIND! It's the responsibillity of the seller ~ or any one of us here on CAF ~ to preserve these pieces for future generations. What this individual has done is criminal. I have had my own horror stories where I've received art destroyed in the mail. So I do understnad your pain & frustration. In any event, I believe you should hold onto this piece and try repairing it as suggested by the previous member's comment(s). You should also leave this post up in your gallery as a warning and a lesson to others who purchase art without giving instructions ~ to the seller ~ on how to package it properly before shipping it out. IGood luck.

Well, I have certainly learned to double check whenever buying from someone who doesn't have a clear history with comic book art. I'm keeping the piece and accepting a partial refund (not as much as I'd like, but I want this situation resolved). I will be trying the flattening method as soon as I can make sure I've got all the stuff I need available, so assuming that works, I'll feel that its all worked out. Hopefully that will be the case. It's been an abject lesson for me to be more sure of a seller before buying. I hope that if any of you haven't had such an experience, that you never do. But the rallying 'round on display here has been great. It's calmed me down, now that I have a clear path to follow. Thanks, everyone!
