Description

Youngblood #10 cover
Pencils by Rob Liefeld & inks by Danny Miki
Story by Rob Liefeld & script by Eric Stephenson
Image Comics - December 1994

Alright friends, this is a big one for me. I never thought I'd own a piece of this caliber from my childhood. This is edge-to-edge, 90's Liefeld greatness. I love the characters, off the page energy, pouches, guns, and even those feet!

I stumbled into comics in the early 90's around the time Image Comics hit. At that time they were everywhere making comic's history. Youngblood was the first comic Image ever released in April 1992 with Spawn directly following in May 1992. This piece is extra exciting as it captures both properties in a special and early crossover issue from one of Image's founders! This also has to be one of Rob's most beautifully drawn issues inside and out to date. This one checks a lot of boxes for me to say the least! It's got almost as many skulls as it does pouches.

To top things off this was the final cover for the original Youngblood series. It's a super rare Spawn appearance by Liefeld! To my knowledge this is the first time Liefeld drew Spawn on a cover. I believe this was only preceded by Liefeld drawing Spawn on some of the interiors in Youngblood issue #8 a couple months earlier and followed by Liefeld drawing Spawn on the Youngblood TPB cover two years later in 1996. There were around 21 issues of Spawn out at this point and there was a Chapel crossover in Spawn #12 in 1993 with heavy connections between these two characters. It was really cool to see Liefeld come back and draw a cover for Spawn #200 in 2011 with Todd's inks on it.

The logos and stats are original and pasted on and with some inks on them. The art is also signed at the top by Liefeld in pencil.

Damn, George!  That is a beauty!  I don't think I've seen a Leifeld Spawn, but he did a great job.

Thanks my friend! I could only find a few rare times that he's drawn the character in the past 30+ years.

WTF?!?! Aren't these things costing into the many tens ofthousands these days? Anyway, it's a really nice one, especially with Spawn on it! The best part though, is hearing your childlike excitement in describing your entry into the comics hobby in the early 90's. Kudos, George!

I appreciate it Ruben! This was definitely outside my general buying habits and I had to sell several pieces I hadn't planned on selling to get it, but so happy it's here.

Congrats George - what a great 'get' - I can't think of a more 90's nostalgic page.  The Spawn image overlapping the logo with a lot of cape action is the piece de resistence!

When I saw all those FOR SALE pieces in your gallery, I wondered what was coming.  Now I know.  Yup, definitely old school Image and old school Liefeld.  Cool that it's a crossover cover too.  Congrats buddy!

It was early Image synergy where Al Simmons found out that it was Chapel that was integral Spawn's origin!  Awesome Liefeld that made this a high effort as fans waited two months for this climatic issue.

HUGE congrats, George!  I know this is a super get for you.  Great art from your formative years - the stuff that got you into this stuff.  Can't beat it, my friend.  And I agree, definitely one of Liefeld's better covers.  Nice uber detailed figure shot (more skulls than pouches?!  Yes!) and that large shot of Spawn takes it over the top.  Love the super large skull at the bottom right.  Interestingly, you don't see it right away...and I dig that!  Congrats, again, man!

Liefeld often gets criticised, but IMO it is undeserved. He consistantly provided satisfying action and your splash is a great example. Terrific inking as well. Congrats.

No joke - I'm actually listening to Rob Liefeld's podcast while I'm typing this, specially the episode that dropped last week entitled "Image Comics: The Last Dance" that talks about how Rob doesn't believe that the Image founders will ever reunite again.  This cover represents a different era, a more fun era in a lot of ways.  Liefeld may be right when he says that the magic from that time no longer exists today, but I have to imagine having something like this cover in your hands lets you feel that magic at least a little bit.

I won't lie, I don't care for Liefeld's art. That being said, this is a major addition, your enthusiasm is obvious and I'm happy for you :)
