DescriptionRuss Heath! I love the color palette he used on this page, to say nothing of the depth and elegance of his watercolor technique. Some really subtle, nuanced shading that still somehow manages to capture all the many subtleties inherent in a brightly lit, Old West, Cowgirls From Hell, Immortal Weapon, Kung-Fu kind of tale. :)His technical skill as a storyteller / architect is also on full display here, when you compare the original page to the published one (and see the word balloons and captions snap right into the spaces he left for them - a perfect fit). Really beautiful work, and I feel very fortunate to display it. The “corrections” panel was included with this page; a color photocopy of panel 6 which was tweaked to change one of the Cowgirls into a bearded rider. And if all that weren’t enough, the published page also features some sage advice from Mr. Fraction: “Don’t shoot until you see the whites of their thighs!” Priceless. Thank you, Steve! EDIT - Rose City Weekend Update! I had the great good fortune of chatting with Matt Fraction about this page on the weekend of RCCC this year (2022). He confirmed the pages are indeed painted by Russ. Matt said that when he wanted to do a "Cowgirls From Hell" / "Cowgirls At War" riff, the black and white pages Russ submitted were pretty full of T&A. "Areolas aplenty", is how Fraction put it. When Marvel said they couldn't publish it like that, Russ painted over the offending bits (rather than redraw them) to tame them down a little (which was taken further still by the colorist, if you compare the published pages to the originals here on CAF). What a great story! Thanks again, Matt! Social/Sharing |

The subject for the next Tarantino's movie? Seriously, spectacular action page with great colors and some naughty (and not bearded) beauties!

I really like the pastel-like color pallet, as it's very calming and presents a nice juxtaposition against the full on action happening across the entire page. Although it's clear that a multitude of health issues were making drawing much more difficult for Heath at this point in his career, everything still manages to be perfectly in place. Except perhaps for the bearded cowgirl! But even with a much simpler drawing style, he still managed to draw everything well. See how he managed to give the primary cowgirl a nice bum panel as well as a nice boob panel? Heath sure liked his women! I love Iron Fist, I love the Western genre abd I've alway loved Heath's work, so this page is a massive winner!

Something about Iron Fist works REALLY well in an Western setting -- his style and flair, chutzpah, and of course the fighting skillz. Love the colors here and how they mesh with his optimistic energy. Whoever said Western books are dead??

Not a bad panel in sight! Heath really captures the spirit of the Wild West in his own unique style. Super fun piece!
(gives new meaning to the phrase "chaps my ass" too ;)

Won't you look down, color me Jesus?
You've got to help Heath make it grand
You've just got to see the thighs to another page
My brush is painting and my Iron Fist at hand
And Russ won't make it any other way
Oh, I've seen thighs and I've seen rain
I've seen leggy babes that I thought would never end
I've seen assless chaps when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Green misting my mind to a deadly time
My beard turned towards the sun
Lord knows, when the cold wind blows
It'll harden your nips around
Well, there's hours of time on the internet line
To chat about art to come
Sweet dreams and Fraction machines, drawn pieces on the ground

You don't often see assless chaps in an Iron Fist story, but Russ Heath pulls it off. Heh. I know he's older, but that's a great page. Fantastic layouts. As you said, his visual storytelling is on display. And it's always cool to get a color page. Congrats!

I don't believe that Russ Heath could draw badly even if he tried to :)
Delightful page complete with cowgirls Playboy bunnies even because it's obviously the most practical outfit for themto fight in in the wild wild west. Against gun shots.

This page is pure gold on so many levels. Russ was a titan not just for his skill, but for his longevity in the business. He never lost a step.

Not too familiar with the artist, but fantastic water colors. I dig the color palette!
