Description

Another great high contrast page from the (only) Flash issue drawn by Steve Lightle.

Lots of various techniques to appreciate on this one. From the negative space silhouette in panel 3 and the departing speed force lightning in panel 6, the tiny horizontal lines on the guide in panel 3, 5 and 6, the kind of smeared inks on the clothes and camp gear, to the deep blocky inks on anything else, you basically have all the available inking tools on display.

I love how Lightle did not draw any lines at each side of Flash’s belt in panel 2 for instance, letting the blank define it. A tiny detail but it shows a true artistic confidence.

You’ll also note that none of the characters are shaved, indicating they’ve now been in the mountain for some days.

Then the subtle storytelling is impressive as always with Lightle.

Wally’s stance and tail of the word balloon in panel one pointing your eye to the right.
The way the snow is falling in panel 2, Flash’s pointy belt, even the way the cloth of the tent is pulled open point your eye down.

A third panel which is plainly horizontal to make you pose and appreciate his power set and the crackling speed force.

A panel four pointing you again to the right (the tilt of the scanner, the snow falling curvedly.

Same thing in panel 5 with the finger pointing your way.

And lastly, the obvious but well done last panel picking up speed, literally, inviting you to turn the page. That crackling speed force swoosh is fantastic.

Just another quiet page by a master storyteller.

Great write up, F M!  The graphic storytelling is indeed superb (gently guiding the viewer's eye through the page itself), but I'd also add how fantastic the artwork is in support of the story being told (via the text and dialogue)...  The dramatic tension is ratcheting up at this point, but Flash can't quite explode out of the gate -yet-...  Even so, Steve makes sure to deliver a page filled with motion and kineticism to build up the tension even further...  Very cool page with more outstanding storytelling from Steve Lightle!  Congrats once more on scoring the full book, F M!

It's a souped-up graphical page too!

Congrats!

Awesome page with spot on storytelling, figure drawing and composition.   Love the use of the reverse image of Flash in Panel 3. Makes us miss Steve even more.   Also, you may want to correct this, but you typed in Stuart Lightle under Artist.  Just thought you would want to know.

There's nothing I can add to what you've already pointed out in your description, but I do want to concur with what you said about none of the characters being shaved. That is a detail that I am personally always aware of and it has always bothered me that most artists either don't think of it or purposely ignore it.

I had gotten so used to seeing Lightle being inked by others that it was a real breath of fresh air to see him handling all the art chores on covers and sequential work during this time. Wonderful page.

The little change up in the backgrounds in panel 5 is a great touch to keep the readers on their toes.
