DescriptionWe left a sick Flash facing an avalanche on the last page and how does he deal with that danger? He dives right into it to save the mountaineers!First, I love how Lightle had the falling snow AND the snowy ground overlapping all panels to both give a sense of location and insist on the menacing situation. The snow is really boxing the page and the characters in, from above and below. The sense of scale is impressive in the first open panel as Flash jumps to save the victims. Having the camera pulling back really give a sense that they are nothing compared to the raging nature. Then we have a great shot of the Flash leaping forward with the 2 persons he saved. Great body language here as you can tell he is tense. And yet my quibble with this one is that it seems like he is flying rather than running. But one could argue he is leaping forward. The third panel is really great as Lightle did an excellent job at portraying the sick Flash here, dipping with sweat. That being said, at this angle, the lower part of his face seems slightly too wide here (on his right side). The fourth panel is a transition to the other mountaineers. You may notice that it is nearly the exact same size as the previous one but while the previous one was vertical, this one is horizontal. Like The shape fell down in order to force the reader’s eye in the right direction (from the far right to the center of the page). We get to see a shot from above of the camp. The fifth panel shows us those who remained inside the tent, worried about the others. Many subtle elements force the eye to the right, the end of the page which needs turning, the first character seen from profile, the way the coffee fumes lean and even the various shadows and inking pattern within the panel. I prefer Lightle's earlier mid-to-late 80s work but always appreciated how he evolved his style over time.

I won't lie, it's the same for me, having discovered him on LSH which blew my mind. And yet, I always followed him closely afterwards and I found that his inks heavy period during the 90s was also of high interest due the high quality of his art and storytelling.

It's not just that he went heavier on the inks during the 90's. He also made a concerted effort to exaggerate the anatomy and make it cartoonier. But as you say, his storytelling ability was always quite strong and that helped to keep me from disliking his new style.

Nicely laid out page and love how the Flash is running out of that middle panel! Congrats!

That central image explodes off the page! Drawn in black in direct contrast to the coloring that would be done on the surrounding snow. Very cool inset closeup of the Flash to make this more dramatic with a look of concern.

Love the cartoony nature of the art!

The effect of having the Flash run out of the panel is so fresh!
