Description

After saving a first character (Piper), Flash goes back to the mountain in order to search for the last one despite his being sick.

That is easily established by Lightle in the first two panels with Flash going full speed into the emergency unit of the hospital and shakily coming out of it.

It continues in the open third panel which sees Flash literally on his knees. His desperation is at its highest here.

Then as he rises up, Lightle dwarfs him against the mountain and stormy elements. The Flash notices a flare up there and the overall situation is looking up again just as he is, a simple device used by Lightle that works quite well.

Then 3 horizontal panels to establish how dire the situation is for Walton here. Nothing but a snow desert, then barely a knee and a hand rising from it and by the time Flash reaches him, apparently just walking, he is even more covered by it. Lightle focus on the lower parts of his body to leave the suspense open as regards he fact that his face is likely entirely covered by the snow, prompting the reader to turn the page.

I feel that the Flash’s sense of mental and physical exhaustion was expertly conveyed by Lightle throughout the page with his heavy use of black and shadows. It also gives a nice high contrast aspect to the page with the blacks against the white of the snow. You actually never see any facial feature on Wally on this one, which also helps establishing his state.

Again a simple page offering a level of storytelling skills that is sadly more and more missing from modern comics as we are reverting towards pin ups it seems.

I quite enjoy pages of storytelling such as this one where the focus is on a different type of heroics of sorts rather than battle/action style heroics. It's also very humanizing when we see our heroes undergoing moments of desperation and/or even despair. Plus, snow makes everything better/more dramatic and challenging both from a visual standpoint and literally within the story such as in this case. The Lightle artwork is fantastic, really great page - congrats!

P.S. - there's still good sequential/quieter storytelling in modern comics today, you just have to look harder to find it I guess. On the whole the "pin-up-ification" of comics and the shortfall of intelligently written prose/dialogue/storylines is a trend within the big 2 for sure but there are still ocasional bright spots

Re your PS: I fully agree and read quite a lot of modern stuff still, mainstream (S-H) or not, but the pure level of storytelling skills is going down. That's fact. Tons of great artists but a lot of bad, average or only apt storytellers imho, especially at the "big two" but that's what you get with those minimum wage page rates.

Very nice Lightle work. Though at this pace, New Year's Day 2030 will arrive before you've posted the complete story.

I know it's the Flash but let's savor good storytelling instead of rushing it all ;)

(It should be done this year still ;)

Believe me, I don't want to see it done in a Flash, but you've been doing it at Snail Man's pace! 😂

Lightle makes us feel that paralyzing cold that bogs Flash down.  We also pick up that it saps the energy from him with the laboring poses.

Phenomenal piece of storytelling by Steve Lightle. Steve was one of the best at storytelling in the business. This page, from Flash 226, is a classic example of his work. I love the top panels with Flash attempting to make a heroic effort to rescue a man, but dropping to his knees in sickness and exhaustion. Then we cut to snow, just empty whiteness. Then we see a man rise up out of the snow, though he's practically buried in it. Finally, in the last panel, we see Flash has somehow reached the man. It's heroism, but a different kind than we usually see in superhero books. Stunning page by Lightle. Great pick-up, congrats!
