This was a great era of Batman / Detective with Don Newton and Gene Colan alternating art duties. And this is easily one the best splashes from the entire run.

You follow my gallery so you know I prefer Newton inked with a smoother approach. That being said, this IS a truly spectacular piece by a fantastic artist and storyteller.
Can anyone imagine opening that book, seeing that splash and not wanting to read on? In that sense the more illustrative approach of Alcala really did (more than) its job.

This era of Batman and Detective is still hands down my favourite of all time. The masterful Alfredo Alcala imbued the world of the Dark Knight detective with so much atmosphere that you could almost smell and feel it. The embellishments were so incredibly consistent, regardless of whether he was working over Newton, Colan, Hoberg or anyone else he may have embellished during his run on these books. An excellent acquisition, man, well done!

Newton died way too young. The Newton / Alcala team is right up there among the great Batman art teams.

I love the design and layout on this so much! There's great contrast between the black and white. Really makes Batman and the batsignal pop. Huge congrats!

WOW - this is stunning, Hal! A perfect (seriously - PERFECT) example of how to balance a comic book page and craft something completely iconic. Impeccably rendered central figure, in a dramatic and beautiful pose, framed so well by the silhouettes and lit windows of the buildings below and Bat-signal above... even the lettering and logo placement...
Just as F M and Marcus point out, this is a timeless image that makes it impossible for any reader to pull away or free themselves from the pull of this beauty; this piece makes its own gravity. Sincere congrats, Hal! Gorgeous!

An iconic image for anyone who grew up reading Batman comics in the eighties. I don't read modern Batman comics, but does he still swing around Gotham like that today? No matter. It'll be very hard to top this example, so my congratulations to you, sir.

When Gordon calls, Bats comes a-swingin'. Running is for normies. What a fantastic moment to get! Just perfect. And what excellent work from Newton and Alcala. Very cool score. Congrats!

I've often found the word "iconic" in the previous comments and it definitely fits to this spectacular splash page, as well as Alcala's inks fit to Newton's pencils, adding depth and substance to the whole image.

Many congrtulations on such an iconic splash! I have also always been partial to Alcala inks (which are unique in their own right) and Don Newton Batman artwork (he left us too soon).

Comment #40! Better late than never :) Killer vintage title splash, man - a true "essence of the Batman" page! Got the OG costume look, swinging across the buildings, when alerted by the signal! Love it, and the title lettering just adds to the nostalgic goodness. Huge congrats!
