DescriptionWeek two of cover month here at Shemp's gallery. A new cover every Sunday for the month of September. The Fury of Firestorm Annual #3. I picked this cover up at Torpedo Con back in July. I went with no intention of buying anything, I just wanted to look around and see what was going on. The room was small, not LA Art Con small, but still small. There were a handful of art dealers there. Albert Moy, the Donnellys, Bechara, Metropolis, Panel Page Art and one other who had a few pages of art but his name is slipping my mind. Looking through Alberts portfolios I saw the Firestorm cover. I have always liked and wanted this cover and knew Albert had it a number of years ago. Three or four years ago, in San Diego, I was going to buy the cover from him. I went looking through his portfolios and couldn't find it. I assume I was too late and he had sold it. I didn't ask, I just assumed. My mistake. I was surprisingly shocked to see it in a portfolio he had at Torpedo. I knew I was going to take it home , it was just a matter of how much $$ it was going to cost. I would have gladly bought it a the price it was marked, it was good price (the price hadn't changed in the 3-4 years since I'd last seen it) Albert was nice enough to take off a couple hundred and I took it home. Not bad for a show I only went to browse. My first introduction to Firestorm was via the Superfriends cartoon. I think it was called Super Powers by then. I thought his powers were cool and he looked cool. I knew the basics about him. I didn't read a Firestorm comic until late into the series, when he became an elemental. I never read his early adventures and so my fondness for the character is from the cartoon. I think that's why I really like this cover, it has all three of the main characters of the comic on the cover, Ronnie Raymond, Professor Martin Stein and Firestorm the Nuclear Man. It's a classic cover. Glad to finally have it in my collection. 1985's The Fury of Firestorm Annual #3 by artist Rafael Kayanan and Dick Giordano Social/Sharing |

Really nice cover. I feel like Kayanan too often seems to fall under the radar in discussions of comic book artists of the 1980s.

I've loved Firestorm ever since I saw the Fure of Firestorm #1 hit the shelves in 1983 and I began reading/collecting it. So much fun, I wish DC would consider collecting the series in trades. Your story is great, though I have to admit that most amazing thing about this is that Albert actually gave you a small discount! Possibly the only recorded instance of such a thing ever happening, aside fom the one Dueling Dealers episode. Kudos for finally acquiring it, Shemp!

Great to see that there are things that do not get repriced constantly for the sake of trying to always get top dollar. Must have been fate since he only brought a limited number of items for this show.

Awesome cover. I have to say it was the Super Powers figure that really got me into Firestorm.
This may be one of the better covers for the character out there. Congrats!!
