Ok. I decided to start off the new year with a bang(er)! A number one issue to boot.

From 1988 comes this gorgeous painted cover by Shawn McManus. The return of Doctor Fate in Dr. Fate #1. First issue of the ongoing Dr Fate series, a follow up to the 1987 Dr. Fate mini-series.

Dr Fate is angry and he ain't going to take it anymore. McManus does a great job forgoing the usually stoic emotionless mask of Dr Fate and giving the new Doctor Fate a much more expressive look. Love the colors. The printed cover loses a lot of the purple. A big beautiful painting measuring 16X24.

There are certain pieces you remember seeing for the first time. I saw this painting once way back in the early 2000's at a San Diego Comic Con. It was big, colorful and beautiful. Absolutely loved it right away. I returned to the dealer's booth several times just to get another look at it. It left a lasting impression on me. At the time I wasn't able to purchase it. I hadn't seen it since. Early last year, I was at the right place at the right time and this time I was able to buy it.

Purchased in April 2023 on the Dueling Dealers of Comic Art. My favorite piece from last year.

Love the color work, and that contrast of the yellow gold of Dr. Fate's costume vs the blues as well as the background and foreground purples. Great textures, too...check out the clouds with those outlined faces, and the mist at the bottom. Sublime stuff. And big at 16x24! Big congrats on a big '80s yet! OK that was 3 bigs in the last 2 sentences :)

What else can I say about this piece that I didn't already say on Sunday night's Show & Tell? Oh, I got something! Had I still been watching Dueling Dealers, I would've claimed without hesitating! 😎

A great piece for the 80's DC #1 collector! Very nice that you can see the purples in the clouds here to make out the faces!

Absolutely stunning. Starting the year with a bang, for sure. McManus found a way to make a character that was around for over 40 years, who wears a helmet, distinctly his own.
