DescriptionI initially encountered Alexander Lozano's work in the form of a cool Cyclops cover that became a card in the game Marvel Snap. Then I met Lozano himself in Lake Como, Italy, where he had the pencil prelim for that card, which I was happy to acquire. I commissioned a pencil version of Nightcrawler, but we both liked it so much that I had him ink it too. Can Kurt really hold pirate sabers in his toes and tail? Sure, why not? Also included is the preliminary drawing, done on thinner paper. The original A4 sheet proved too small for the layout as it progressed, so Lozano taped it in the middle a larger A3 sheet so he had room for the "BAMF!" sound effect behind Kurt, as well as further detail on the arms and swords. Then the whole thing was redone on a piece of Marvel Bristol board, first in pencil and then ink as mentioned above. The underlying pencil version lives on in the additional images, as does a color version he produced digitally. Social/Sharing |

He's held a third sword with his tail before. Definitely plausible seeing that Nightcrawler can train in the danger room with the swashbuckling program.

Back in the 80s during the peak of my X-Men fandom, my absolute favorite character was Nightcrawler. This drawing captures the swashbuckling majesty of everybody's favorite German-accented, demon-looking, nice-guy teleporter. Seeing this makes me wish that Marvel would pair Lozano with a whimsical writer like J.M. DeMatteis on a solo series or graphic novel.
