DescriptionI've long wanted a Simonson original. One of his Thor covers would be a dream but I never got a look at one.Around 2011, my friend Jim Warden said he would help get Walt to do a commission for me. It took awhile to get done (probably due to my indecisiveness) but it finally happened last year. As for the commission itself-- I asked Walt to use the pose of Beta Ray Bill from Thor #337 as the central image. I wanted Thor to replace BRB and I asked Walt to include montages from other Thor covers. I love Silver Surfer #4 cover so that was included on the bottom. Thor #350 is the other image that I absolutely love so, we replaced Thor with Asgardian Storm. Ulik the Troll was something Walt wanted to include in the commission. Hence, Walt drew this scene of Ulik battling Thor. Huge thanks to Jim for making this dream commission a reality. I owe you Jim!!!! Lastly, eternal gratitude to Walt for including all these various Thor images in my mind and then making it a cohesive whole. I'm elated with this!!!! 8 ) PS. Thor was inked with brush, and the rest is pen and ink. Social/Sharing |

I've never seen such a detailed commission from Walt. So many great callbacks here! My favorite is the Silver Surfer #4 one in the lower left corner.

Phenomenal! I love everything about this piece, from the central image of Thor swinging his hammer, to the small scenes of Thor vs. Surfer and Thor vs. Urik! Simonson's works at another level than most comic artists and he really shows his stuff in this piece! Congratulations Joe!

Wow. Just wow. Wow. This is such absolute insanity. You'd expect a page where the artist goes all out like this from some new artist trying to impress, but from Walt?? Wow. Congrats, Joe. Unbelievable.

Been waiting for you to post this. And don't forget to mention the size. I saw a pic of Walt holding this up on Twitter, and it's MASSIVE! Might be the biggest piece he's ever drawn. Hard to imagine Walt outdoing this one in his lifetime. But I'm sure that's what you had in mind when you commissioned it. After all, you only want the best.

It's wrong to call this a commission. It needs a new category - its way too great to be called 'a commission'. Words fail me on this one...wow!

Holy cow!! Whew. Definitely one of the best Simonson pieces ever, and that's of course saying something! Love that central image of a BRB posed Thor, and the surrounding images are equally as good. And Asgardian Storm! This one really does have it all, as they say! Huge congrats!

This is a commission? It is better than a commission, it's better than a cover, I am not sure what to call this other than pure Simonson gold. Well worth the wait - hearty congrats on this masterpiece! Thanks for sharing!

Congratulations on a TRULY epic illustration by Walt Simonson! At 20" x 30" this one really does have to be seen in person to fully appreciate its grandeur! Everything about this piece is fantastic, but I especially love how Walt incorporated the Silver Surfer # 4 cover homage at the bottom; having the characters on separate sides of the large hammer gives the illustration a wonderful balance. It took a bit of time and patience to finally get this beauty completed, but it most certainly was worth the wait!!!
