DescriptionThis is a project I have long wanted Bob Layton to do. I loved his work on the All Star book back in the 70s when Bob gave a special quality to Joe Staton’s pencils. What inspired me to do this was the great Captain America commission Bob did for Alberto Gonzales. So my concept was to have Bob recreate significant moments from the Golden Age on one commission. I went into various archives and selected cover images from 1940’s issues featuring various characters. On a couple of occasions I discovered certain characters (Atom, Dr. Mid-Nite and Wildcat) had never been cover featured so I found other cover images and substituted the cover feature for the cover omitted character. I found a central image of Dr. Fate, taped the cover images on the same piece of paper and sent them off to Bob to create his magic, which as you can see he did. For reference here are the issues the covers image came from going left to right. · Starman: Adventure Comics # 61 · Black Canary: Flash Comics # 92 · Hourman: Adventure Comics # 48 · Green Lantern; Green Lantern # 1 · Flash: I suggested using Flash # 92 for Black Canary, Hawkman and the Flash, Bob used the Infantino Canary, but because of space dropped Hawkman and included a bust of Jay Garrick. · Sandman: Adventure # 46 · Dr. Mid-Nite: This is one of the substitutions; I used a Hourman cover and asked for Dr. Mid-Nite to be substituted from Adventure Comics #59 · Spectre: More Fun Comics # 54 · Atom: Another substitution, this time I used a Starman image from Adventure # 64. I also asked for the second uniform, since I really dislike the original. · Wildcat: Hourman steps in again providing an excellent image for Wildcat to have the cover spot he deserved, this substitution comes from Adventure # 50. · Dr. Fate: All Bob Enjoy! 04-07 Social/Sharing |

Wow!!! Honestly, words can not describe this piece. This may be the singular best piece you have ever commissioned or Bob has ever drawn. Just the thought you put into designing this idea is amazing let alone how well Bob pulled it off. Congrats Sir, Congrats!!!!!

This is the GREATEST Bob Layton piece I've ever seen and Bob is, as always, an amazing illustrator! DC should make this a poster..This is among the best commissions on CAF....

An original idea for the Golden Agers given the golden touch by an artist with one of the most appealing, polished styles ever to grace the pages of a comic. What would we do without artists like Bob Layton to make our comic dreams come true?
