DescriptionThe third of a three page ‘Gotham City: Year One’ sequence I’m posting today. Happy Batober! This is my favorite of the three pages because of its spectacular balance and composition: the great, slightly tighter camera placements following Slam, the solid white “faceless mob” figures in panel two, and the detailed cityscape all contribute to a fantastic and beautiful page with some real weight to it, narratively. Super storytelling that is really fun to look at. Comics! :) With every background detail stripped out of the Slam panels, it puts his struggle front and center. The viewer can almost feel the force of the blows being traded here, and just like Slam here, Phil and Eric pulled no punches artistically. Thank you once more, Eric! Social/Sharing |

Again, an excellent use of blacks! So well balanced, which serves to strengthen the already rock solid composition of each page. A great, three page sequence, Jason, congrats!

Great 3-page sequence. I think I'm with you on this being my favorite of the set (although that jazz panel at the top of page 2 also got my attention). I love the interlude panels that are intercut with the main fight sequence. Especially the middle panel here. Maybe they were worried about over using the technique, but I kind of wish they had done it through the entire sequence, switching from positive to negative as the fight went on. In any case, this is just great storytelling and really beautiful b&w work.

Agreed that this is the best one of the three (mirroring page one) and the most brutal for sure. I love the detail of the horizontal line on Slam's nose in panel 3 implying his nose is broken.
You know that to me, Phil and Eric's art was the point of entry to this series and remained so after my read since King's writing felt a bit too forced to me. But the art alone makes it a must read.

Didn't read the series but Hester's art is always a treat for the eye: clear and effective storytelling combined with a deep expertise and flair for what to include and NOT include in each panel. The middle panel is a showstopper but wouldn't be nearly as effective without the two panels that sandwich it.
