DescriptionPosting a beautiful three-page ‘Gotham City: Year One’ sequence as Batober rumbles on!As the battle for the soul of Gotham City rages in the background (spoiler alert: it loses), Slam Bradley fights on, refusing to quit on the good people of Gotham. Yup - it’s as "on the nose" as the haymaker laid on poor Slam in panel 1 (and just as brutal), but it’s a -terrific- opening to the final issue of the series. The rich, gorgeously rendered (and terrifying) city scenes that are interspersed between the stripped down panels of bare-knuckled brawling give Slam’s battle a true sense of urgency, heroism, and (ultimately) futility, brilliantly underscoring the stakes involved here. The larger struggle is -so- much bigger than our two combatants, but the story sets our man Slam at the center of it to make it personal. The fantastic composition and inking of the page sets a broken shop window in panel two, smack dab in the very middle of the page, and borders it with darkness to pop out a nifty ‘frame within a frame’. It feels like we’re looking directly into the heart of Gotham to see the rage and unrest seething there. It’s always great fun to assemble a sequence of pages from a book you love, but with the strong design sense unifying these three pages, keeping them together felt like a Grand Slam necessity. Thank you for the chance to do so, Eric! Social/Sharing |

Now THIS is the way to start the story off with a bang! Excellent composition indeed and beautifully spotted blacks. Yowza!

Uh, uhh, listen
First the Bat Boys break up, now every day I wake up
Slam Bradley got a problem fights on
Whassup y'a Phil Hester all fed up cause I got the Eric Gapstur
And my knuckles punching out the brawl?
Dumb luck spitting at me, young Slammers getting Bradley
My writer King predicted the shit exactly
"Mo' Money, Mo' Problems" gotta move urgently
'Cause Gotham hates when you getting ready end series
Yung'uns ice-grilling me, oh, you draw brilliantly?
Fine, it cost you nothing, pages all mine
Look, it’s on the line Gotham, ain't got time for fronting
Sensitive thugs, y'all all seethe tough
Damn Marvel fans I'm just trying do me
If the artwork's two mill' I'm just buying all three
Send a couple of checks, get 'em to try the DC
Hopefully they'll manage before I need my barrage
I don't want much, fuck I took every scar
Some nice cooked mood, some nice clean drawers
Big-ass Slammer I don't mean to ruffle y'all
I know you waiting in Eric but I'm doing my inks
Where's the love?
Ain't no love, in the art of the city
I said where's the love?
Ain't no love, in the heart Gotham
Yeah

This is a textbook example on how to effectively manage open borders/backgrounds (and their absence).
