DescriptionThat first panel is a snapshot of my childhood. The neighborhood utility box is where all the kids gathered to discuss whatever. Frequent topics included comic books and the latest Hip-Hop music, so to have a tribute to one of rap's most iconic groups on an original comic book page is pretty special to me. It wasn't until I looked closer that I noticed Eduardo Risso's amazing storytelling and flow throughout the panels...At first glance, this is just a talking heads page among three kids but somehow Risso manages to have all three boys performing new and original actions from unique angles in each panel. The flow follows a kid getting his hat knocked off, retrieving it, and then in the final panel he can be seen adjusting it through the reflection of a car that pulls up onto the scene. The kid on the utility box goes from feeling like a king on his throne (utility box), talking crap and knocking the hat off of another kid, slapping a high five with his other friend, to looking visibly shaken by the time he notices that car pull up. That last panel leaves you wondering just who is in that car and what's in store for these kids just like a page should. This is simply a masterclass in storytelling. What an inventive way to capture and deliver a scene. I don't know if this page would be anywhere near as good in the hands of another artist. Social/Sharing |

Thanks, man. I feel like Eduardo's work is some of the most deserving of in-depth analyses.

Awesome camera angles used. The final image is definitely like a car ad with the fully glossy mirror finish of the car meeting the equally slick wet street.

Nobody draws a 'talking heads' page as well as Eduardo. Love all the little touches you mentioned, as well as the background silhouettes of the two kids high-fiving after they'd bopped his hat off.

I agree 100%. He adds so many little touches to his work that are easy to miss while reading his books. I find new things every time I revisit one of his issues.
