DescriptionPurchased from Mitch Itkowitz-1998Brushwork with gray washes In 1959, “Mad” creator Harvey Kurtzman produced the first book-length work of original comics, the adult-oriented, satirical “Jungle Book.” Published by Ballantine Books, it’s considered by many to be Kurtzman’s most acclaimed solo work.This page comes from the story “Compulsion on the Range”, a satire that blends Westerns and Freudian pop psychology. In “Compulsion,” a psychologist tries to work out why Marshall Matt Dolin (a parody of James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon from the popular “Gunsmoke” TV show/1955-1975) insists on trying to outshoot Johnny Ringding, chasing him across the West.
