DescriptionTodd McFarlane had an amazing run with Spider-Man, including breaking sales records with the launch of his own series. With the benefit of hindsight, this issue (10) was one of the most special he produced even though it’s been largely forgotten. Todd got sick and fell behind on completing it, forcing him to ask his friends for help inking… you know, the guys he would start Image Comics with one year later.Wolverine page? Give it to Jim freaking Lee. Pages with tight line work? Give it to Scott Williams. Spider-Man in a dynamic anatomy breaking pose? Give it to Rob Liefeld. This issue is insane. Let’s ignore the fact this book is a few months before X-Men #1 where Jim and Scott would take the heavyweight belt and never look back. Let’s just focus on Rob who inked this page. Rob was riding high. He had recently taken over New Mutants, creating fan favorite Cable and turning one of the lowest selling titles into a goldmine. Two months before this issue he created Deadpool. One month before he created X-Force. And immediately after this issue came out X-Force would get its own series and Rob would absolutely shatter sales records (nearly double Spider-Man), opening the door for Lee’s X-Men to follow suit. Rob is a controversial figure in this space. A lot of people love to hate him and several artists very vocally criticized his work. I would argue most of it was unjustified and came from a place of jealousy and ignorance. Rob was selling 10x the number of comics and doing so with a style people didn’t properly understand — and to top it off, he did it at an age when most were still living with their parents. Rob and Todd led a new generation of artists who challenged the rules of how comics were made, ultimately resulting in the creation of Image. People like to joke Rob couldn’t draw feet and they were always too small. But Rob knew the size of a character’s feet didn’t matter. Know what mattered? How excited he could make you feel flipping the page. Rob challenged the status quo and explored character shape, page layout, perspective etc and created a new type of energy that grabbed your inner child and strapped it to a rocket ship. Todd, in his way, did the same thing with Spider-Man as evident with his now iconic distorted form as shown here. Todd and Rob were at the forefront of the avant-garde wave that swept through comics in the 90s. Spaghetti webbing isn’t stupid (sorry, De Falco), neither is a thousand pouches — they look cool and they don’t have to make sense. I love books like Watchmen, but there is room in this medium for unapologetic fun. I am very happy to have this page of the greatest Marvel character put together by these two legends. Special thanks to Scot for agreeing to let this go. Social/Sharing |

Thank you :) Yeah, either one of them could have made the page on their own.

In many ways, they broke the code and the house style that Marvel was known for. In some ways they had the daring and audacity that made guys like Ditko and Kirby such innovators that turned the monster era of Atlas into Marvel.

Totally agree, Marcus. There is so much about them that's reminiscent of Kirby when you really think about it.

Great page. Normally I hated other people inking Todd but having him jam with 3 of the hottest artists of the day was exciting. All of them imposed their style over mcfarlane to great result but I really liked liefelds stuff. Rob really went all out here. Congratulations

Thank you, Thomas! I totally agree with your sentiments. I normally feel the same way about Todd inking his own stuff but obviously this issue was an exception.

Outstanding Spider-Man page by Todd McFarlane! I love the top panel with the full-length figure of Spidey, showing off McFarlane's unique take on anatomy. And of course, I especially love the bottom panel, with the multiple Spidey poses as he comes to a landing in that crazy cool pose McFarlane introduced. McFarlane made Spidey look more flexible than a yoga instructor! Great inks by Liefeld as well! Fantastic addition to your great collection!
