Description

It was a dark and stormy night in the city. You could feel the thrum of the city and the sounds of discord coming through your feet.

That's what I feel when I look at this page.

I didn’t think it was possible after I found a double page spread from Swamp Thing that I would need another piece of Mike’s art. I love that piece and the work he did on that series. He has simply upped his game again and this is an incredible series.

I love the darkness, the rain, and the atmosphere that he brings to Gotham. Gotham should be a character in Batman stories and Mike's work brings it to life.

Batman + fights + Gotham + monsters = awesome.

This page is slightly larger than twice-up size, measuring approx. 16.5" x 21"

Beautiful mood and atmosphere! You started off your description beautifully, Brian! Mike certainly captured the feel of a stormy, rainy night in spectacular fashion. I love the closeup of his face as he'd being choked and the following panel  showing his right hands reaching for the straight razor is spectacular as well. All the white highlights are incredible, as are all the wash tones!

Beautiful!  The white border panels don't provie any relief to the tension of the moment as this rookie Batman looks more vulnerable to these monsters.  The beatdown comes from the foes and from the rain.

"Dark and stormy night" does -NOT- cover this one, brother! :) Less rainstorm and more "unholy downpour of torrential elemental fury" (or even "celestial, pus-filled boil that had been lanced, and its despair and pain washed down over the denizens of Gotham..."), however you want to phrase it (less pus, please), one thing going in our favor is that we have Mike Perkins to take us through it.  Such stunning work!  The time period this was set in was special in many ways: not only did it give us a chance to see Mike draw a pre-WWII Gotham, but it was a simple and elegant way to "de-power" Batman and raise the stakes on what would normally be a relatively "simple" task for him: facing down a baddie in a parking lot.  In this story, you really felt like two or three guys could take out our Dark Knight Detective.  Super fun!  So that, along with Mike's incredible ability to depict a storm on a page, really amps up the drama here. LOVE the razor cuts to depict the rain.  LOVE the drops of white paint in panels 7 and 8 to show the water impacting off of Batman's hands.  And those hands!  The last four panels are my favorites here, I think, with Mike's beautiful brushwork doing some seriously heavy lifting.  Mike's camera placement (and zoom!) is perfect as well, moving the action along clearly, and never letting us lose sight of the fact that this is a painful fight that isn't going well for our hero.  The lighting in panel 5 is simply -superb-.  This whole thing is beautiful chiaroscuric storytelling, and is a gorgeous testament to the next-level work Mike was doing on this series - congrats on grabbing such a sweet example of it!
