Description"It lies somewhere in the far reaches of the eastern Indian Ocean... They named it Pushkara, the center of the world..." So says Asha to Griff in Mark Schultz' short story Storms at Sea (2015), which mixes pulp elements from Burroughs, Lovecraft, and Hammett. Details tie this story to Schultz's early work on Xenozoic Tales. Soon our two heroes will be forced to seek out Pushkara, pursued by agents of the shadowy First Order and hoping for assistance from ancient beings from far beneath the Earth's crust. This highly rendered pencil image shows Asha, Griff, and a First Order guy in the company of one of the immense ancient ones. But true to the pulp influences of this tale, it could just as easily be Flash Gordon, Dale Arden, and Hans Zarkov with some strange alien. Or Jack Tenrec and Hannah Dundee from Xenozoic Tales. For now, the story of Pushkara goes no further than one short story. However, related images have been collected in Mark's series of Carbon books. Most of the pieces were paired pencil and ink versions, each as lovely as the next. This 10.75"x14" piece was published only in pencil, which is fine by me, since I like the shading opportunities of graphite. I also took the opportunity to enjoy Mark's company at dinner the night I purchased this at Heroes Con 2023. Social/Sharing |

Just great in the range with which Schultz can make pencil line and shades work seamlessly to fully bring out his imagination.

I was actually looking over your shoulder as you viewed Mark's portfolio at Heroes that day. Was able to be perhaps the first to congratulate you this purchase!
Just a stunning example. So glad it found a good home within your fine collection.
