DescriptionEven at the time it was published, I thought the coloring of DKR was really special. It helped set the tone for the series and was colored much better than books were being colored at the time. Part of the reason for this was the color palette, but also the process. Varley colored the book beautifully, using a very muted color palate that was a lot more sophisticated than most mainstream comic books at the time. The inked pages were reproduced at a smaller size onto a clear film overlay. Another copy was printed on a board in "blue line" - a process that renders the lines "invisible" to the camera. Using the overlay as a reference, Varley then painted directly on the blue line board. The final colored piece, with the black film overlay, became camera ready art - it was shot directly to produce the printed page. If you've never seen one, these are REALLY cool in person. So happy to add this to my collection as I had to sell one last year!Social/Sharing |

Such a great page... Beautiful colors --- I love the contrast between the muted grays and bright spots of color on Carrie's Mutant costume and blood on BM's mouth

Yeah, the colors on this book were amazing. There were a few series that used this technique - Chaykin's Ironwolf, and V for Vendetta to name a couple! I guess it's a lost art form with it being done on computers now. Thanks for the comment!

Love Lynn Varley's color work for Dark Knight Returns. I think Lynn's selective use of color really enhanced our enjoyment of the book. Look at this page and see how much of the page she painted in tones of grey without any real color to speak of. And then, when she did use color, it was a very limited color palette--Some soft flesh tones, a touch of orange and red in one panel, a pop of yellow for headlights on the bike. That was it. By limiting the colors, Lynn was able to direct our attention to a few important panels. My hat's off to her for her artistic sensibilties. I wish more colorists had her level of skill. Great pick-up, congrats!
