DescriptionNorman Nodel: "A-Robbin' Upon the Salt Sea", Complete 4-page story from Pirates, "The World Around Us" Series #7, (Gilberton, 1959). Nodel used his considerable scratchboard skills to tell the (true) story of an old Scottish ballad about a boy who turned pirate. Scratchboard is time-consuming - that's why comic book artists rarely used it - except for Nodel, a successful magazine illustrator, this assignment must have been a labor of love. The art image size is 10.5" x 18".When I received the art all text pieces were almost loose, as was most of the scratchboard on the splash page. I took some photos before reassembling the splash. A bounty of pirate tale artwork! The face and the body language are expressively dramatic in both panels.
