Description

Let me start off by saying Bone is one of my all-time favorite comics. I can’t recommend it enough for those who have never read it.

Back when I ran a comic shop, Bone was a book I’d often recommend to younger readers and those who enjoyed a classic style epic. I’ve always described it as the kids Lord of the Rings adventure for those who have never read the series. There are a lot of parallels but the basic plot of the Bones (Hobbits) going on an epic fantasy journey, attempting to save “The Valley” (Middle Earth), far from their home of Boneville (Hobbiton), tied in with the classic theme of good and evil made an obvious connection for me– I’m sure plenty of you made the same connection.

Anyway, I told my buddy Tom a longer version of this back when, and I guess it stuck with him over the years. Tom knows I love Frazetta’s work, so he commissioned Jeff to do this piece as a gift last year for working on the Thorn Kickstarter. Tom did the digital colors below.

Must be nice knowing someone who can actually get Jeff to do a commission. All I can say is WOW! As beautiful a Jeff Smith Bone piece as I have ever seen. And love the personal connection of course. Congratulations on this very special piece.

This is an excellent swipe of the classic Frazetta piece and I too use LOTR to describe the Bone series to potential readers. Beautiful work by both Jeff and Tom!
