Today is a special kind of day. On Tuesday 29th of October 2024, my baby daughter was born. It's been quite a journey, with some ups and downs. But my wife and I both feel extremely blessed with our first child.

In our country, we have the tradition of sending a birth card to let family, friends, neighbors, ... know that your family has grown. Typically, you can order and somewhat limitedly design these cards online. You pick a font, you pick a theme or animal, and there you go.

For ours, we wanted something original and personal. We wanted an artist who could do "all-ages" paintings, with his art reflecting our feelings. We wanted something colorful and hopeful. The theme would be our love for Ghibli, still with an animal like most birth cards. During our honeymoon trip to Japan, we saw the rare pink Totoro in the Mitaka museum and that idea stuck with us. The Autumn or Fall theme was only logical as she's born in October.

Jared Cullum immediately came to mind and he absolutely loved the idea. Although he first couldn't fit it in his schedule, a few weeks later, it all worked out. Knowing we were on a bit of a timeline, Jared prioritized our painting and started working his magic, based on all of our ideas and a quick prelim we had designed. He gave his notes and we co-created this beautiful work of art.

Jared's design became our North Star as far as the theme goes. For the gifts we'll give to visitors, for her room - and her godmother made the most beautiful nursery mobile (I also programmed the mobile with Ghibli lullaby music). It's as if Jared's painting came to life.

This watercolor commission was done on a rather big 10,5 x 14 board. Next step is to get this professionally framed and mounted in her room. We also have one in a Spring theme in the works by another artist.

PS. I wrote most of this post in advance, as I'm probably busy changing diapers and mastering the art of dad jokes.

This painting is spectacular. I love how the hobby has melded with such a special time in your life. I'm sure you'll cherish this forever. Congrats!

Thanks, Joe! I'm lucky to have a wife with similar interests, so it definitely crosses the barriers. We did something similar for our wedding invitiation last year.
