DescriptionLike a Leaf on the WindIn honor of DDub's mind-blowing new Transformers art, enjoy some old DDub's art! Though honestly it never gets old to me! One of my only DWJ covers, but it really checks all the boxes. Wash's (or is it Mal?? Let's hear thoughts in the comments!) looks almost smug as he outmaneuvers flanking enemy ships, demonstrating the artist's well-known nuance with human expression. The Serenity rendered in characteristically DDubs fashion as the G-forces exerted by the pilot's maneuver and the roar of the jet engines distort the vehicle's frame without losing the iconic silhouette of the movie's namesake. Foreshortening of the blasterfire creates an immediacy of peril, juxtaposed across Wash's quiet certainty. Inkwash and white out, also staples in his work, add dimensionality and completeness to the art! Interesting to note this was done with ink over printed blue lines, not common in Daniel's work. Deadlines perhaps? I should also mention how well this piece pairs with my Chewie/Millennium Falcon commission! Not intentional, just a happy accident in my DWJ collection. Watch How I Soar! You can feel the heat with those scorching lines across the bow! The space battle pulls together everything you'd think about int he sequence with quick edit cuts.

Awesome DWJ cover with his signature action! I stopped reading the series early on, but that actually looks more like Wash than Mal (and Wash was the crazier pilot of the two).

The thought definitely crossed my mind that it could be Wash! The biggest hint (besides being behind the controls of the Serenity) is that Spicer colored his hair yellow blonde rather than brown. I have always seen him as Mal because the big collar makes me think of Mal's duster and I'm of course more familiar with the art than the published cover so Spicer's choice hasn't really sunk in for me. You definitely could be right though. I'll have to ask Mr. Daniel next time I see him!

Looking again at the published cover, between the eye and hair color its definitely Wash! That was also probably Daniel's intent when he kept the hair and eyebrows free from inkwash. I maintain the likeness for me personally leans a little more towards Filllion. I'll have to update my description... and my interpretation of the piece!

I looked up the published cover, and agreed, it's definitely Wash. I can see the collar conjuring an image of Mal, but it also works as one of Wash's funny shirts. And it's interesting you think there's more of a Fillion likeness because I think there's more of a Tudyk likeness. :) Still, glad to see this conversation got you to look at this with new eyes!
