R. H. Webb, Artist. Rod Maxwell, Writer (a pen name for Ruth Roche)

At least nine weeks’ of releases (54 strips) for the daily newspaper strip “The Hawk”, were probably produced around 1952 for Jerry Iger’s Phoenix Features.

Ruth Roche also created and wrote the female-led adventure newspaper strip ”Flamingo“, drawn by Matt Baker and syndicated in the New York World-Telegram by Iger’s Phoenix Features Syndicate. She soon became Iger’s associate editor, and after Will Eisner left the partnership, the studio reorganized as Roche & Iger, with Roche as partner, Business Manager, and Executive Editor.

Nicely detailed strip. I guess it helps that they were printed much bigger back in those days. Thanks for the additional info about Ruth Roche. I only knew her name from the credits on Flamingo strips.

Cool having two females in the adventure strip targeting a male and female audience. The heavy inks and shadows are exact and are just enough to suggest their girlish figures in the last panel.

The Hawk captured all the great elements of the Fiction House comic books. A fabulous strip here. I enjoy the dark sinister shadows within these panels.

Great addition and thanks so much for sharing it here on CAF!
