Description

So much to love about this page.

First, the context. For those who haven't read the story, Paul Dini is out for an evening on the town with a wannabe actress. Even though she's clearly using him as a potential source of connections, he tries to fool himself into believing something more may be possible. Unfortunately, the little Joker in the back of his head can't help pointing out how clownish that is.

As for the art, this masterclass in storytelling starts with perfect panel symmetry to heighten the juxtaposition between the top and bottom tiers. On the diagonals, panel 5's Joker literally douses water on the foolish romantic ideas Dini is entertaining in panel 2, while panel six shifts the perspective on panel 1 by changing the camera angle and pulling back to a long shot.

Then, of course, there's the center placement of the pie. So smart. It pulls your eye right to the transition moment of the page, then fittingly holds it there before guiding us to the (black) heart to heart conversation in panel 4.

And those tones! The up lighting is simply gorgeous, as is the fine detail in the glove and hands. You don't often see Risso use tones, but he's proven to be as talented with them as he is with his high contrast black and white style.
