DescriptionOk, I'm a little late for Columbus Day, but the package arrived only this morning and I'm so thrilled for this piece that I'm not willing to wait until next year to share it 😉I wanted an original Manara in color (I mean one that didn't cost me an arm or a leg) from some time now, and I'm very glad to finally have got one ... Or rather, two! In fact, although it was published as a single page, the artwork was done on two separate cardboards. Or perhaps the cardboard was originally one and it was cut later. Anyway, I've managed to acquire both pieces, so I've reconstructed the whole page! As you can see by looking at additional images, the original colors are more vibrant than the published ones. Written by Italian journalist and popularizer Enzo Biagi and beautifully illustrated by Milo Manara (54 pages) and Giacinto Gaudenzi (37 pages), this biography in comics of the great explorer and navigator was first published in Italy in 1991 (by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore) and then in other European countries. Manara may be famous for his skill at depicting beautiful women, but his talent is so much more than that. This piece is a feast for the eyes.

Manara must have done his research in 1991 to show how Columbus fed natives to his dogs on his second voyage 1493 bringing 20 mastiffs and greyhounds. Surprising, since this is before the time when Columbus' legacy was reconsidered.

Beauty and violence... Manara can conjure all contradictions of man on a single page... Superb, of course and a nice pick from one of his less-known aspects...
