Description

This is the series that got me back into reading comics after twenty years off adulting. Kitty was my "point of identification" character as a kid, and Joss Whedon, who clearly loves her deeply, understood her as few writers did. So he made her the focal point of his 25 issue run on AXM.

In this sequence, we discover that the Danger Room is both sentient and enraged. Soon it will manifestat physically in an android form. But for the moment, it's using holographic Shi'ar technology to turn its interior into an approximation of Hell. Kitty is inside, with all of Xavier's students. She could escape, but instead she rallies them to use their powers in mutual defense.

John Cassaday used widescreen panels like these extensively, reflecting his background in cinema. This particular page dives into body horror, as Danger manifests in the form of Wing, a student who committed suicide by jumping off Xavier's cliff. His twisted body makes a grisly and terrifying sight.

Although Cassaday's work looks great in black and white, colorist Laura Martin deserves a shout-out for her stellar work throughout this series. Check out her contributions in the Additional Images section.

Great moments making Kitty the leader to these young mutants to show her character growth over the years. She was once the youngest on the team and demoted to be with the New Mutants back in the 80's. The colors set the mood, so I guess Chuck loves the attention to detail when programming the danger room or let it self learn to become the real Danger.
