DescriptionA twice-up (16x23!!) stunner by the Dude himself.More reinvention than recreation, if the original cover was a daytime soap opera scene shot on a low-budget backlot at high noon in front of a dusty flat and back alley backdrop, this beauty was pulled from a classic Hollywood musical, filmed completely on-location on a simmering, sultry summer’s evening, with a pedigreed Director of Photography and in 360-degree Dude-O-Vision. Everything is recast anew: the archway over the tenement door (and the railing and concrete details on the stoop), the sheen of the car’s leather seats, the fire escape and profile of the building next door, the tapered edge and brickwork of the old tenement building itself (right down to the shadow of the black cat on the fence), to the woman’s fur - oh, my goodness, that mink coat... EVERYTHING is beautiful and painstakingly realized by a master craftsman at the peak of his powers. There’s even a beaming, resplendent crescent moon nestled up in the top left corner: the cherry on the cake of any romance cover worthy of the name. There's some fun storytelling, too... As the disapproving old woman glares down from her window ("He's with -another- girl? Again?!?"), the “gentleman’s" eyes look down onto the seat of his car and come to rest upon the purse and gloves sitting there… possibly realizing they belong to none other than the woman coming down the stairs…?!? So why Girls' Love Stories #13? This from the original commissioner: "By 2010 I had a big OA collection. But very little romance art. So, around 2015 I decided to contact Steve and asked him to do that cover. I chose that cover because the post WW II to the late 60's era is my favorite in comics, with the late 40's to the late 50's being my focus. I especially like city scenes. And just about anything, like clothes, or cars, that indicate that time period." (Hope that's okay to post, Joseph. Please let me know if you'd like me to remove that from the description!) The cover gets an undeniably glorious new coat of paint, a fresh re-upholstering, a soup-to-nuts engine rebuild, and just goes to show (as if any further proof is really needed) that the world just looks -better- through the filters of Steve Rude’s eye, hand, and pen. Thank you, Joseph! Social/Sharing |

Wow! Where to even start. The layering here is brilliant and gives it an incredible sense of depth. The car interior in the foreground, the couple behind that, the women on the front steps (that shadow on the door is brilliant by the way), the building facade behind her, the view inside the front window, and even a peek into the alley to the left. So masterfully done. And I think it actually works much better in b&w than in the original published color cover. One of the most impressive Rude pieces I've ever seen.

From fancy art Rude always brings
My love’s about given to what Steve inks
There's really not much I won't do for Rude
I bought you 12 jealous poses for Elly too
I like be up front and never pay in cash
But the way you treat me girl, like my Cadilliac
It's real Rude cover and from olden times
That you were by my side diggin' dollars out of art
Oh oh, girl
As long as I've been givin' my love to you
You should be givin' me your love, Rude
But you just keep romancin' just like a tool
You know it’s all Rude
It's from Steve Rude!
Ow! Don't be cruel

Terrific re-creation. Rude does such a great job, on this piece and other similar re-creations, of synthesizing the original artist's approach with his own and making the art something that honors the artistry of the original artist as well as himself.

beautiful re-imagining from the dude!! very interesting idea and can't think of many artists who'd do a better job of a recreation like this in the romance genre than Steve - so kudos to the original commissioner but also to you for giving it another spotlight, congrats!

Has a strong throwback quality but feels fresh at the same time. The expressions are perfect and the inks? Sublime stuff. Speaking of the inks, there's a nice contrast with more on the botton (car seat, his pants, etc) and less as you move up. The capper is the lettering - adds another layer that closes things out nicely. Congrats, man!

Well, hard to top that description! The Dude makes everything better, with more attention to detail and imagination per square inch than anyone else....

The only thing I dislike about your descriptions is that you civer literally EVERYTHING there is to say about the piece, leaving me gasping for something to say! Anyway, you already know how much I love this because I expressed it when you first showed it to me during a webchat months ago, but seeing it via a proper sized scan is such a feast for the eyes. The draftsmanship and technique here is otherworldly and so much higher level than most other artists in this industry. I can only imagine how great it looks in person, especially at the large size its drawn at! I'm green with envy.....

Hussa Huzzah! These classic romance covers are so underrated. Wonder how I would've been influnced growing up with these as a kid.
