DescriptionAddendum: Oops! Checked my Astounding stash and the "Nuisance Value" abridged is actually from an older story; I was thinking of Eric Frank Russell's story of the same name from '57._____________________________________________ Cover for Manly Wade Wellman's "The Dark Destroyers," one side of a 1959 Ace Double. Curiously, this short novel is a radical abridgement of Wellman's "Nuisance Value," from the December 1938 and January 1939 issues of Astounding. A recent pickup from CAF's lovely and talented John Davis, and many thanks to him! Social/Sharing |

This is truly fun! Especially neat is the chicken head shaped creature with tentacles for the beak.

I was somewhat puzzled by the chicken motif, but damned if it ain't right there in the story: "They were great, transluscent, helmet-shaped things.... The comblike crest stood a full five feet from the ground.... At a point just forward of the top sprouted a spray of from six to eight tentacles, like a wriggling plume for the helmet." So there you have it, Valigursky rendered it with absolute fidelity to the story.

What a fun piece. I love the composition and want to know more about the character with the tentacles and a mowhawk.

I'm reading the story right now, savoring the acrid smell of decaying pulp paper...

The tranlucent property of the creature's body and the mechanical tendrils makes for a very intriguing contrast in the design.

Like at least 2 other commenters before me, fun was the word that immediately came to mind when I saw this! Great Valigursky example!
