DescriptionOk, ok, everyone's been getting super freaked out that my last CAF posts were X-men related, so we're back to ole web head today.I entered the ASM franchise around issue 160 and loved it, but dang it, the book came out monthly which was a looong time to wait, so I discovered that I could buy these things called 'back issues' - more Spidey, yeah! My local shop kept about a yr of back issues, so I basically read 150-160 all together. Then I found a book that collected the whole clone story line and death of Gwen, etc. Sidebar: Weird 1970's thing many of you may not have thought about: By reading the Spidey clone storyline, when I watched Star Wars for the first time, my head exploded when Obi-wan said that Luke's father fought in the 'Clone wars'. Do you think Lucas was inspired by Spidey? Kind of weird coincidence, eh? This is my first Gil Kane Spidey and many don't put him on their top Spidey artist lists, but wow, I love his Spidey run (especially the 120-124, 150 part). That's a long way of saying this page checks a lot of boxes for me. As a refresher, 150 is a big anniversary issue where Spidey is a mess. Is he a clone or the real thing? He get's Doc Connors to run a test and then he is attached by the Vulture, Sandman and Kingpin who turn out to be robots created by Spencer Smythe who attacks Spidey in this doc-ock armed robot (named the Spider-Slayer BTW). I'll stop here because this is where we jump into the action-> Panel 1 - Spidey Slayer has Spidey wrapped up and WHUNG smacks Spidey against a wall Panel 2 - Smythe goes on a bit of a monologue Panel 3 - another smack panel 4/5 - monologue panel 6 - smack! panel 7 - Spidey is gassed, can't break free, this could be the end! Color version in alt images. Thanks @DavidIMV for the help on this one! Social/Sharing |

Well, well, well. Spider-Wimp gets beaten up again. Is he really any better off than when he was being bullied as a bespectacled student in AAF15? You could write a thesis or two on why the old clunker plot device that the hero has to endure defeat and trials before winning is still used. Thats why I like the early Superior Spider-man, Doc Ock stories, where he beat the tar out of lamo villains.

As a kid, Kane was the very first artist whose name I learned and whose issues I actively sought out. What a great page!

Kane says, "A page for Scot Wingo"
He framed this on his art wall"
He has McFarlane vision
Says, "I draw Spidey fighting, but if Smythe comes back again
Tell him clone a page here for me or,
Bid again tomorrow I'm gonna play art hero
I'm gonna bid, not let go"
Kane says "Have you seen best page around?"
"I feel no doubt about it."
He knows they all want action flow
That's okay man he spins webs in everyway
My brain says, "I'm buying a page of Kane
When I get my money saved
I'm gonna start tomorrow
I'm gonna bid tomorrow
I'm gonna bid tomorrow"

Absolutely love the page. Kane gets overshadowed by some of the other great Marvel artists but he had a style and draftsmanship that I love!
Congrats!
