DescriptionA fun page from the blockbuster event WWH (which IMHO was basically a 5 issues fight and not the greatest success as a crossover but I digress). The opening splashy panel is obviously the main incentive of the page with a badass She-Hulk smashing the ground in order to put all the inhabitants of Manhattan into submission into leaving the island before her cousin destroys it. She really has a commanding look here in that Ghost In the shell inspired hand on the ground position and while I fell in love with a sexier version of the character under Byrne’s tenure on the character in FF and her own series, she certainly does not lack charm on this page either. The second panel is super fun to me in the sense that on top of featuring a black costume Spider-Man (I must be RICH!), there is a visual sense of camaraderie between the two heroes that harkens back to those title of my youth such as Marvel Team Up or Two in One where you really got a sense that it was a shared universe, such sense I feel is (sometime) lacking in the current Marvel editorial line if you except the usual monthly line wide crossovers. What is also quite fun is how tall JrJr drew Shulkie in comparison with the bystanders. Her smoking hand is yet another fun detail. Then we get two panels showcasing the evacuation of the island. JrJr being the expert storyteller he is, you really get a sense of panic here. The cables of the bridge boxing in the fleeing population in the third panel and all the packed boats in the final one (though I confess, I’m a bit puzzled why JrJR chose to show those going to the left and not to the right which would have made more sense in a final panel. Lastly, while I’ve never been the biggest Klaus Janson fan, his inks over JrJr (or anyone else) always added a grittiness which is ideally suited as it’s quite the street level scene and story. It also looks like he had fun with people’s faces being shocked by She-Hulk massive display of force in panels 1 and 2. Those are typical Janson faces and I’m sure he is also responsible with all the flying debris in those panels as well. All in all, a fun page from two master artists and storytellers. The money shot is certainly a great one, but I've always been very partial to scenes that include bridges, especially when those bridges have as many cables as the one depicted in the 3rd panel. Great stuff. Janson is one of the all-time best inkers, I'm surprised that his work has never really appealed to you. I see what you mean regarding the 2nd panel though. I, too, remember the feeling of Marvel Comics all taking place in a shared universe due to how they'd show the characters running into each other and interacting with one another. Fun stuff!

I do like Janson's work quite a bit. It's just that I prefer the slick/can't see a drop of ink school of inking to the "spontaneous" gritty textured one.

That top panel is great!, the contrast in the bridge/architecture makes the entire page balance out very nicely.

It's a great reminder of JRJR's ASM #36 9/11 book where the citizens of New York had to evacuate. NYC is the heart and soul of Marvel as much as Spider-Man.

Really, really solid page, F M, that acts as an iron clad reminder of what a fabulous cartoonist JR, Jr is. Nothing is over-rendered for over-rendering's sake; there is the perfect amount of detail to convey the story while still showcasing the art chops. The simplicity of the expressions (both of the frightened citizens in the top panel, and Shulkie's awesome smirk to Spidey in panel 2) do a lot of the heavy lifting for the writer. And same with those last two (superb) city shots: cluttered images because it is a mega-populated metropolis, not because of artistic "twiddling"; there's just enough detail Great use of blacks by Janson in those last panels, too, allowing for some cool bridge cable texture and mass to the bridge, freighters, and people movers. Just as you say - fantastic work by a top-tier art team. Congrats, Fred!!

(And, to be clear, I madly, passionately -do- love artistic "twiddling" at times, with all my heart... but this page is a fantastic example of the grace and economy that is the hallmark of JR, Jr's style. Everything is in service to the story, and is intended to visually convey all the info a reader would need in every image. That intention may sometimes be at odds with creating the "prettiest picture" (and to his eternal credit, as with Kirby, he'll always err on the side of the storytelling), but not here. Lovely, LOVELY page, Fred!

Many congratulations on a splendid piece - both artistically as well as from the perspective of the design and layout of the page itself. And like you, I prefer the lusher inks.
