That center panel is the heart of the strip and it is well framed by the almost silhouette dark panels around it that forces even more focus towards the center.

I agree. And the third panel is an exquisite use of black on black. Other artists might have drawn a little white outline on her black blouse and skirt to separate it from Willie's black shirt and pants but Holdaway melds them perfectly together.
