DescriptionThis set all started back in February of 2009 when I went to NYCC. That was the very first time I met both Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. Both were extraordinarily friendly and it was a real pleasure meeting them. I asked Peter for a turtle headsketch on the sketch cover and TMNT alum Steve Lavigne was offering to water color the headsketches right next to him. I then took the book to Kevin Eastman and decided to ask for a Casey Jones sketch on the back. Having both TMNT co-creators sketch on one book was an awesome keepsake for me! When I went home that night, my affinity for complete sets kicked in and I decided that I wanted to make it a set with Laird doing the 4 turtles on the front and Eastman doing support characters on the back. I didn't have many chances to see these guys, so I knew this would take some time.Steve Lavigne asked me what color I wanted the bandana on this one. Donatello is my favorite turtle, so I almost went with purple. However, I decided to go with red so I could pretend it could be any turtle since in the comics, all their bandanas are red. I knew I wanted to ask Eastman for a non-turtle sketch and when I thought of a good pairing for Raphael, the obvious choice was Casey Jones. Kevin seemed to enjoy the break from drawing turtles and really added some great detail to the sketch. Why pair Raph and Casey? It doesn't get more obvious than this one. Casey's first appearance was in Raphael's 1-shot comic. In the first movie, Raphael is the one to meet Casey beating on some thugs in the park (not unlike the comic). In almost all versions of the TMNT, Casey meets Raph before meeting the other guys, both characters are hot heads, and they become close friends once the dust settles. Social/Sharing |
