Description

This piece is the first new commission (for me) by Nick in 10 years! I was a huge fan of Nick's comic cover work and movie poster style paintings in the 2000s and 20-teens, and I have a huge gallery of them. (this gallery lol) He is one of my absolute favorite modern painters who was well on his way to being the next Drew Struzan IMHO when that style of work dried up and all went digital. So over time he grew disenfranchised with comics and movie based work and decided to leave to pursue more personal fine art and gallery work instead. He even taught workshops to help others learn to watercolor paint like he does. I have a bunch of those paintings as well. But when he decided to leave the biz in 2015, I was his last commission painting he did. (see The Dark Knight Trilogy painting in this gallery, huge and incredible!) The daily watercolor paintings and gallery stuff was cool but he didn't do commissions or comic stuff anymore. Cut to earlier this year and he decided to come back to doing comic commissions specifically to build up a new comic portfolio to come back to comics! It is so exciting to see him just having fun with brightly colored superheroes as that is not what he did before. I was so excited that he is taking commissions again after 10 years, I ordered 2 lol. So I have another coming in a couple months, and I cannot wait to see it and show it off.

This piece blew my mind when I saw it. Such great use of light and color and a different look than his acrylic or oil stuff. I love watercolors by someone who can really use them and Nick is absolutely one of the best. If he comes back to doing covers for comics, I look forward to seeing more of his new style! I highly recommend following him on IG where he is most active to see the awesomeness he has been up to lately!

Really cool how Runge fills up the composition! The street lighting below brings the heat to light up these two into action!
