Description

11 x 17

Always been a huge fan of the Firefly TV series and movie so I try to pick up nice pieces from the comics when I can. Killed 2 birds with one stone here, getting a great painted Firefly cover by Gabriel Hernandez Walta!

Really just the perfect encapsulation of the series. A serene scene depicting one of the main characters of the show, Serenity in the American West. Great desert landscape calling back to different locations in the show but also the fact that it is a wonderful Space Western.

Always loved Walta's ink line and hatching and here with the watercolor is a perfect combination.

Very nice illustration. It looks very, very European influenced.

Walta is a Spaniard, Ruben.

Yeah, I know. But there are tons of Spaniards in the industry who have traditional, American styles. Just because you come from and still reside in Europe, doesn't automatically mean you will have an illustrative style that evokes the art seen in European albums. As I say, most of the Spaniards working in American comics have what I call pretty standard American looking styles. Also, I remember Walta doing some fill-in pages on Astonishing X-Men when Mike Perkins was on the book a decade ago and while his style in that was definitely not America looking, it wasn't quite the classic European style like he illustrated this piece with.

Get you, Ruben. Funny how Westerns are still so popular in Euro comics. I do get a sci-fi Blueberry vibe from this piece.

Yes, quite so, well said. A Science Fiction Blueberry feel is very apropos here! And yes, I love the visuals of the Western genre and the lawlessness of that era of the American southwest of the later 1800's. It's incredible to think that the Western genre was the most popular one in American entertainment for decades, and then later became the least popular for many more decades. Meanwhile, it is beloved by many people, but primarily on a completely different continent!

Exactly! The first reference that comes to my mind by looking at this image is Gir/Moebius. Congrats on this striking cover!

Gorgeous!  Definitely evokes 70s era European SF comics, and the setting reminds me of Herriman and Road Runner from the American school.  The composition and color palette are fantastic.  Re Europeans holding a nostalgic view of the American Wild West, I think Americans romanticize WWII era Europe and continue to revisit war stories from that time a lot as well.  The grass from the past is always greener on the other side of the pond

This has the flavor of a Maxfield Parrish Arizona painting.   Congratulations on an exceptional cover,  but honestly a very fine painting.

I only ever watched the movie so I can't speak to the quality of the series but this cover is really oustanding in its own right. I'm blown away by the color palette Walta uses here.

WOW... Now -that- is beauty, pure and simple.  Even Serenity herself seems paused in midair, just looking around in sheer disbelief over her good fortune that she is in the midst of such a landscape.  Gorgeous colors and beautiful linework; a fantastic addition to your amazing collection.  Congrats, Jason - this is fantastic!

Man, Walta is GOOD.  Serene setting here, and love those bold lines paired with the softer colors.  Effective stuff.  Congrats!

Great choice. Love his painted covers. This ons is very cool, and I love how the ship floats in the scene.
