James' work has intrigued me since I was a kid. I remember calling around comic shops as a 12 year old trying to find a 1st print of #1. Pretty much an impossible task in those days. In the years since, I've owned a bunch of copies of that book, but this is the first time I've tracked down a page!

This page is right at the beginning of the story proper and, according to the gallery tag on the back of the frame, dates from 1980 when James first started working on The Crow. The Crow head shot in the bottom panel is an all-OA patch (probably done closer to the 1989 release of the Caliber book) over top of older original art. One of these days, I'd like to have it lifted onto an overlay so I can see the early 80s version underneath.

I'm uploading a couple pics of the gallery labels on the back of the frame because it's cool provenance - from Bess Cutler Gallery in NYC (where much of The Crow's original art was sold) and Kevin Eastman's Words and Pictures gallery (where James had an exhibit in the mid 90s). This page is obviously well traveled, but for now it's found a long term spot on my wall.
