DescriptionI present you the mythical #1 cover of the legend Amok, the character who fascinated readers all over Europe from the end of the second world war until the end of the 70s.In 1946, stories of the character created by di Cesare Solini and Tony Chan, pseudonym of Antonio Canale, were published-alternating with those of other characters such as Charlie Chan and Gim Toro-in the first series of the Avventure e Mistero series published by Edizioni Juventus until 1948 for 50 issues. The series was so successful that it was reprinted many times in Italy then translated to France, Spain, Argentina, and Turkey. In Sweden the series was translated and printed as Kilroy; when its publication in Italy was suspended, the comic continued to be published in Sweden with new original adventures drawn by Rolf Gohs. Amok is an athletic masked vigilante who fights evil in the Far East with the help of his panther Kyo and American journalist Bill Davidson. Born on the island of Java on the night his father was murdered, as an adult Amok decides to wear a mask and become a vigilante after his girlfriend Nikita is kidnapped. His adventures lead him to fight the Scorpion cult. A vigilante with a Superman-like physique and a costume strongly inspired by the imagination of Lee Falk's Phantom aka The Ghost Who Walks, Amok, a Javanese giant, stands out from his counterpart by his impressive breastplate bearing a dragon's face. This image features all the main characters who will be part of Amok's adventures for decades, from the mysterious and bewitching jungle of Java, to the cold alleys of soulless cities... It was also used on cover #13 of the Collection Aventures et Mystères by S.A.G.E. edition published on April 01, 1947, which contained the first appearance of Amok's adventures on the French market. Glorious find! Such a great debut image! It showed that spirit of strength and rebuilding a national identity after the war.

Wow! What an amazing find! While I've never read Amok, the Masked Giant, I love the art here. The dramatic pose of Amok in full costume, surrounded by his supporting cast, is fabulous! I love seeing the comic book heroes of another country! Great pick-up!

Fabulous! The side panel scenes are very nicely done. Thank you for your description providing the background of this character and comic. Even Spock would like it!
